Semester off

Students have the option of taking a leave of absence due to pregnancy and/or the birth or care of a child or the care of a close relative.

During a semester of leave, it is only possible to complete coursework and examinations under certain conditions.

Please note:

  • As a rule, there is no entitlement to BAföG during a semester of leave.
  • If you are in need, you can apply for benefits according to SGB II.

  • BAföG recipients are obliged to notify the responsible office of the interruption.

     

Semester of leave due to pregnancy and/or childbirth

A semester of leave due to pregnancy and childbirth is possible if the calculated date of birth is in the semester applied for.

The following applies in this case:

  • There is no obligation to pay semester fees.

  • No examinations can be taken and no credits can be earned.

     

Semester of leave due to childcare or nursing care

If the leave of absence is due to childcare or caring for a close relative, the following applies:

  • The obligation to pay semester fees remains in force.

  • It is still possible to complete coursework and examinations.

     

Application

The application for leave of absence must be submitted to the Student Secretariat together with the required documents.
