Your journey to Siegen
If you are traveling to Siegen from a nearby country, we recommend that you do so by train or bus. Here you can compare the different means of transportation for your travel route.
Please note: For onward travel from the airport to Siegen by train, we recommend the Deutschlandticket. With this ticket, which costs €63 per month, you can use public transport throughout Germany free of charge (except for ICE and IC trains).
The ticket can be purchased from various transport companies or directly from Deutsche Bahn (see here). Please note that you need a bank account with IBAN and BIC and that it must be SEPA-compliant in order to purchase tickets from Deutsche Bahn. Alternatively, you can use this transport company
and its app to purchase the ticket by credit card or PayPal.
Enrolled doctoral students automatically have a Deutschland-Semesterticket, which is part of the semester fee paid and can be used for onward travel from the airport to Siegen. However, you should activate the ticket beforehand, which can take a few days. Further information can be found here.

For those traveling to Germany by plane, there are four airports not too far from Siegen.
Frankfurt am Main Airport is Germany's largest commercial airport and the fifth largest airport in Europe. To get from Frankfurt to Siegen, there are various means of transport to choose from.
The cheapest way to get there is by bus. The Flixbus for example, will take you to Siegen in just 2.5 hours. Tickets are available from €11.89 and the bus runs two to three times a day.
Train tickets are available from €17.90, but prices can vary depending on the connection and date of travel. However, trains run several times a day and will get you to Siegen within 2-2.5 hours.
The fastest (01:50 h) and most expensive way to get to Siegen is by cab. There are also companies that specialize in transfers from Frankfurt Airport. These companies offer cheaper prices compared to cabs.
Cologne/Bonn Airport is an international commercial airport located between Bonn (former German capital) and Cologne. Cologne/Bonn Airport is served by 23 airlines and was formerly authorized for landings by NASA space shuttles.
The quickest and easiest way to get from the airport to Siegen is by train and takes about 1.5 hours. Tickets are available from €12.90 and connections leave once an hour at xx:18.
Taking a cab is a lot more expensive, but only takes an hour to get to Siegen, traffic permitting.
Düsseldorf Airport is NRW's largest airport and a number of different international airlines fly from here to over 100 destinations. DUS Airport also has the tallest airport tower in Germany at 87 meters.
The train journey from Düsseldorf to Siegen takes around 2.5 hours and tickets are available from €21.99.
Taking a cab is also an option, but it's a lot more expensive and not much, if any, quicker than taking the train.
Dortmund Airport is the third largest airport in North Rhine-Westphalia and is located 10 km outside Dortmund. It is located in the eastern Rhine-Ruhr area, the largest conurbation in Germany.
The journey from Dortmund Airport to Siegen takes around 3 hours by train, with tickets starting at €22.39. takes around 3 hours by train, with tickets starting at €22.39.
You can also travel by Flixbus, but you will first have to take the airport bus(AirportExpress, 25 minutes non-stop, €10) to Dortmund Central Station, from where the Flixbus then travels to Siegen. You will then need around 2 hours in total.
The quickest, but also most expensive way to get to Siegen is by cab (approx. 2 hours).
