Our understanding of consulting

The General Student Advisory Service and the Psychological Counseling Service for Students cover a wide range of topics and advice for prospective and current students. We offer free information in talks, events, workshop series and much more.

With our extensive range of services, we address pupils, parents, teachers, pre-students and students, but also anyone outside these target groups who is interested in information about studying at the University of Siegen.

Close links and cooperation between the General Student Advisory Service, an internal and external advisory network and the Psychological Counseling Service enable those seeking advice to take advantage of our various areas of expertise.

What can you expect?

You can use our counseling services on a voluntary basis. You agree the number and duration of the counseling sessions with the counselors.

The basis for an open and honest discussion is a high degree of trust. We therefore treat personal data and the content of the consultation discreetly. No personal information will be passed on or stored without your consent.

Your interests and wishes as well as your private life situation are taken into account in discussions, which we treat with respect. We support you in your concerns, but do not make decisions for you. We respect your privacy and the decisions you make and do not question them. Our aim is to support you in solving your questions with all the aspects that are important to you. We take a neutral position in discussions and provide you with independent, unbiased and open-ended advice.

In consultations, we treat you in an unbiased, friendly and open manner. We understand your questions and thoughts. We take your concerns seriously.

You play the central role in our consultations and set the topics. We give you further impetus by providing information and asking questions. In this way, we show you possible alternatives that can broaden your perspectives. We encourage and support you in making your own decisions and taking action. We cannot answer all questions, but we will support you in finding specific contact points within and outside the University (e.g. Student Secretariat, Studienförderfonds Siegen e.V., IHK, etc.)

Our backgrounds from different professional backgrounds and the counseling skills that unite us offer you a professional service. We are also in contact with external advice centers and institutions. This enables us to expand our own development opportunities and offerings for various consulting occasions. Your feedback is important to us. Based on this feedback, we are constantly developing our services for you. We keep our own skills up to date and develop them further through further training.

Psychological counseling

We have an open ear for all students who are currently looking for neutral support in finding solutions to their concerns. We can address both study-related issues (e.g. learning and exam anxieties) and private issues (e.g. loneliness, a break-up with a partner or friendship, psychological discomfort). In the form of psychological counseling or coaching, we work with those seeking advice to develop options for change and help them to solve personal problems independently or provide information on other support services.
