Money, money, money - financial tips for life at university
The topic of finances is often complex and opaque for newcomers to the academic world; for many employees, even their own salary notification from the State Office for Salaries and Benefits (LBV) is a closed book. Even more experienced academics occasionally wonder how payroll accounting actually works. This is where the event comes in.
Contents of the event
First, we will look at the gross salary: What do TV-L (West), classification and experience levels mean? What are "credit periods" and "eligible periods"? What are the effects of part-time employment, special and one-off payments, allowances and bonuses? For third-party funding applications, we also touch on the employer's gross salary.
Then we get down to the nitty-gritty - the net salary: What role do tax class, allowances, income tax and solidarity surcharge play? What needs to be considered with regard to social insurance (pension, unemployment, health and long-term care insurance)? We also deal with supplementary pensions (VBL) and capital-forming benefits (vL).
In addition, we discuss the special features of civil servant status, remunerated teaching assignments, fees for lectures and publications as well as distributions from the collecting society VG Wort.
Finally, we will discuss some typical academic peculiarities in the context of tax returns (without, of course, interfering with the tax advisory professions in any way: no tax advice!), in particular the lump sums for trips abroad (conferences, research).
This event is aimed exclusively at doctoral candidates, doctoral students and postdocs.
