There has been an important change in the examination rules regarding the registration of a master's thesis, effective immediately. Specifically, a master’s thesis can only be registered if the modules from the respective adaptation block 4MECHMA001 and 4MECHMA002 or MECHMA011 and 4MECHMA012, the modules from the required block 4MECHMA021, 4INFBA100, INFMAEX901, 4MECHMA022, 4MECHMA023, 4MBMA005, and 4MBMA059, as well as at least 18 credit points (LP) from the elective block have been completed.
This change is intended to prevent situations in which students complete their thesis but later permanently fail a required module and, as a result, are unable to obtain their degree.
The legally binding text in German is as follows:
The application for admission to the master’s thesis must be submitted in writing or electronically to the Examination Board. Admission is governed by § 13 RPO-M. Furthermore, admission can only be granted if the modules from the respective adjustment block 4MECHMA001 and 4MECHMA002 or 4MECHMA011 and 4MECHMA012, the modules from the required block 4MECHMA021, 4INFBA100, 4INFMAEX901, 4MECHMA022, 4MECHMA023, 4MBMA005, and 4MBMA059, as well as a total of at least 18 LP from the required-elective block, have been successfully completed.
The framework examination regulations for the master’s degree program have changed. Effective October 1, 2025, students enrolled under the FPO 2023 may apply to have a maximum of two failed exams counted as a free attempt during their master’s degree program in Siegen. The application for a free attempt must be submitted to the Examination Board within one month of the publication of the exam results in unisono. The exact requirements for using free attempts can be found in § 12a RPO-M.

Deadlines for the Summer Term 2026
Registration for coursework (e.g., mandatory submission of exercises, practical assignments, homework, seminars, project work, and possibly also preliminary examination work) must be completed via unisono before the first (partial) assignment is submitted. Registration is open unisono from April 1, 2026, to September 23, 2026. As long as you are not registered for coursework, you cannot and must not submit any coursework! Please address any issues directly with the relevant department chair. Please check the module descriptions (see below!) to see in which modules you are required to complete coursework.
Registration for written exams runs from June 8, 2026, until 14 days before the written exam (unisono calculates the exact date!).
Please note that different deadlines apply for exams in modules imported from other degree programs. Information on this can be obtained from the examination office of the degree program from which the module is being imported.
The deadlines listed are strict; registration after the deadline is only possible in justified cases of hardship by submitting a written request to the Examination Board!
Registration for oral exams (online registration in Unison followed by scheduling a date with the examiner) must be completed at least one week before the exam date (preferably well in advance!). For third attempts, registration must be completed through the Examinations Office at least two weeks before the exam date.
Important: Registered oral exams, preliminary exams, or coursework that will no longer take place in the registered semester must be deregistered at least 8 days before the end of the semester. Unattended registrations for examinations, preliminary examinations, and coursework will not be carried over to the following semester, and it is no longer possible to deregister or re-register. In this case, you will automatically receive an NE (not passed; for graded achievements, this corresponds to a 5.0).
Regular withdrawal from exams (i.e., without a medical certificate) is possible in unisono up to 7 days before the exam. Please note that the unisono system calculates this deadline based on the actual time of the exam.
In case of illness: A withdrawal request (please use the withdrawal form) must be submitted to the Examination Office in writing or by email as a PDF within 3 business days (FPO 2023) after the exam, along with the medical certificate or certificate of incapacity for work; do not send the medical certificate to the chair of the examination committee. (If submitted by mail, the postmark date applies.)

Module Manual
Preliminary draft of the examination regulations, including the module manual and study plans, effective from the winter semester 2023/24 onward.
The English translation of the preliminary draft of the examination regulations (effective from the winter semester 2023/24) is expected to be available in spring 2024. Until further notice, anyone wishing to switch to the new examination regulations may only do so based on the information contained in the German preliminary draft of the examination regulations.
