Chair of Wastewater and Waste Management Engineering
Prof. Horst Görg, Ph.D. (Eng.)
The research group focuses on
- Water Supply
- Wastewater treatment
- Waste management
in both teaching and research.
Commitments to environmental protection involve preventing new environmental hazards as well as identifying, assessing, and remediating existing ones. Water is an integral part of the human-made environment and a central component of urban water management. Engineering design, construction work, and the application of process engineering are both proactive and reactive. This applies to infrastructure in terms of expansion, maintenance, and adaptation in the face of the challenges posed by climate change, demographics, and resource constraints. The development and establishment of sustainable approaches are based on compliance with standards and the demonstration of impact, e.g., through analyses, calculations, or model simulations.
Water (including wastewater), Waste, and Resources
"Both a curse and a blessing"
Areas of Work
Wastewater - Waste - Water Supply
Wastewater engineering deals with the collection (retention), discharge, and treatment of water contaminated through use, including stormwater in urban areas.
Discharge - Purification
Waste management encompasses the technical and economic aspects of prevention, treatment, and reuse (recycling), as well as the environmentally sound disposal of residual materials, particularly construction and municipal waste.
Treatment - Recovery - Disposal
Water supply follows a chain of processes, starting with (raw) water extraction from natural resources, through technical water treatment and storage, and ending with transportation via networks to consumers, taking into account both qualitative and quantitative aspects. Water supply and wastewater treatment together constitute the urban water management system.

SiWa Lecture Seminar 2026 - Water Supply
Topic: Innovative Planning and Electronic Network Analysis
(Street View/QGIS/STANET/EPANET)
A SiWa lecture seminar will take place on April 15, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. in Room PB-A044. The format is designed as an “open” lecture/workshop for students and, if applicable, professionals in the field, and is intended to provide an opportunity to exchange experiences.
Research Profile
Innovation - Practice - Quality
The teaching and research area of wastewater and waste management, led by Professor Görg, is an integral part of the Research Institute for Water and the Environment (fwu). This enables the targeted involvement of high-performing partners.
Climate change, demographics, and resource issues influence environmental infrastructure. The vision of clean water in an intact environment fits seamlessly into the University of Siegen’s guiding principle: “Shaping a Humane Future.” To this end, researchers are seeking adequate, practical, and sustainable solutions that meet high standards of innovation.
“Solutions” refers to global, regional, and local contexts.
