The Department of Construction Economics and Construction Management introduces itself

Baumanagement & Bauökonomie

The Construction Management and Construction Economics course covers construction-related content from the areas of cost and schedule planning, tendering, construction site management and quality assurance. In addition, the basics of construction economics and construction management, knowledge in the field of project management and project development, economic and organizational office management and project implementation as well as further fields of activity for architects in the economic environment are taught.

This knowledge is an important building block in the training of future architects. Profession-specific interrelationships in the field of construction and economic understanding are taught, which helps to supervise a project competently and holistically through to completion. A key objective is to transform qualitative design tasks with the same depth of requirements and quality of execution into the built reality and at the same time to be able to control and comply with essential requirements of the client such as cost and deadline compliance in the function of a custodian.

The basic knowledge imparted includes, among other things

  • economic principles and project cycle considerations
  • Project phases, models of project execution as well as planning and construction participants
  • the basic services defined in the HOAI, special services and additional services of architects, including remuneration for services
  • quantity takeoff in types, parameters, use (DIN 277)
  • the methods and influences in cost calculation and control according to DIN 276
  • Scheduling from superordinate project contexts to the scheduling of construction site work
  • the transformation of planning into a tender as the basis for the construction contract, including the processes and principles of awarding contracts
  • the implementation and enforcement of execution qualities, also with regard to laws, regulations, standards and guidelines
  • the handling of construction projects in construction management with their typical individual aspects and structures
  • the examination and calculation of supplements to concluded construction contracts during the construction process
  • the framework conditions for practicing the profession: freelance work, the chamber system, setting up and managing an office, options for procuring contracts, etc.
  • the structure of architectural offices and the organization of projects within a planning office, etc.

Baumanagement & Bauökonomie - HOAI

In addition to this basic knowledge, content is developed that goes beyond the original field of activity of architects. This includes project development as the initial spark before planning begins, process-accompanying project management and facility management with a focus on the later utilization phase. Economic contexts and structures are also developed as part of the Master's course, especially for building in existing buildings.
In addition to the above-mentioned content, the course also focuses on the cross-border activities of architects. Working in other EU member states or in distant cultural circles is increasingly developing into a major potential for German students and architecture firms. Therefore, in addition to the framework conditions in the target countries, the special features of architectural exports are examined from an economic and organizational perspective in order to build up knowledge, minimize risks and develop interest.

The basic aims of the course can be summarized as follows:

  • Teaching structural interrelationships and construction economics fundamentals
  • Practical relevance and applicability of construction economics content in later professional activities
  • successive development of specialist knowledge with the help of scientific working methods
  • Research with the involvement of students and through the networking of different specialist disciplines
