Financial support for students with family responsibilities

Studying with family responsibilities requires organizational talent, stamina and often financial flexibility. Whether childcare, pregnancy or caring for relatives - family responsibilities bring with them particular challenges, especially in financially strained situations.

The University of Siegen provides targeted support for students with family responsibilities through two funding instruments:

  • the family scholarship - to support students in the final phase of their studies

  • the family emergency fund - to bridge acute financial emergencies

Both offers help to prevent students from dropping out of university for financial reasons and promote equal opportunities.

Family scholarship

The University of Siegen's family scholarship supports students with family responsibilities in financially difficult situations on the way to their degree. The aim of the scholarship is to make it easier to combine studies and family and to provide financial relief for students in a particularly challenging phase of their lives.

The grant is awarded as a monthly payment for the duration of one semester.

Who can be supported?

Students enrolled at the University of Siegen who:

  • look after and care for at least one child in their own household, are pregnant and/or look after and care for a relative in need of care,
  • are in the last semester of their degree course,
  • are writing their thesis or can provide evidence of a comparable amount of work required for their degree and
  • are in a financially difficult situation due to this situation.

Further criteria can be found in the current guidelines and conditions of application.

Application deadlines

The application deadlines are:

  • March 1 (summer semester)
  • September 1 (winter semester)
  • In case of pregnancy, an application is also possible outside the regular deadlines!

Please note

Before submitting an application, a personal interview with an employee of the Family Service Office is mandatory. The application form will then be handed out.

Family emergency fund

The Family Emergency Fund is aimed at students at the University of Siegen with family responsibilities who find themselves in an acute financial emergency. The aim of the fund is to bridge short-term financial bottlenecks and enable students to continue their studies in a stressful situation.

Support is usually provided as a one-off financial aid.
