English

English is the central language of international science and research. A good command of English enables you to access specialist literature, participate in international conferences and publish your own work. Our courses provide students and staff with targeted support to improve their academic communication skills - in writing, speaking and presenting - and thus successfully shape their academic work.

Global English

English program

We currently offer English courses at levels B1 to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The general language courses comprise between two and four semester hours per week, depending on the level.

Course structure

As a rule, two semesters are required to complete levels B1 and B2. Level B1 comprises 4 semester hours, level B2 a total of 8 semester hours. This gives learners sufficient opportunity to systematically refresh and develop all four language skills - listening, reading, speaking and writing.

The C1 program at the Language Center comprises five courses of 2 SWS each, which are offered every semester:

  • English - target level C1.1
  • English - target level C1.2
  • Public Speaking (B2/C1) (online course)
  • Introduction to Academic Writing (B2/C1 Level) (online course)
  • Academic Writing - BA dissertation, MA thesis and academic paper writing (C1 Level) (online course)

New from summer semester 2026: Upon successful completion of three of the five courses, a C1 certificate from the Language Center will be issued.

Performance assessment

As learners have different approaches to language acquisition, the assessment concept is based on a combination of continuous and final assessment.

During the semester, learning progress is documented through performance assessments such as learning checks, online exercises, oral contributions and regular homework. This is supplemented by a summative examination at the end of the semester.

At the end of a course level (B1.2, B2.2 and C1.2) there is also an oral examination.

Placement test

If you have taken an onSET placement test at the Language Center or attended a course in the last two semesters, you do not need to take another placement test.

If you have a valid official language certificate (e.g. TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, IELTS, Cambridge, UNIcert), send the certificate by e-mail to the English Coordination Office. You will then be admitted to a suitable course.

For all others who have not yet taken a placement test or have not submitted any certificates:
If you do not know your current language level exactly, you can use the table
and then register for a suitable course from our program. By the end of the second enrolment phase at the latest, you will receive an email with all the important information about the placement test, which is carried out in the first week of lectures via the onSET
platform at the Language Center and is a prerequisite for participation in a course.

Consultation hours

Appointments can be made by email.
Appointments take place in person in room F-S 302. If required, a digital consultation via Webex is also possible. You will receive the access link by e-mail shortly before your appointment.

A very kind teacher with extensive experience. The lessons are very interesting and include a lot of practice. I feel motivated to continue learning the language.

I liked how interactive the course is. In my opinion, the concept corresponds exactly to level C1.1.

The English course was very well structured and easy to understand. The teacher was motivating and responded to individual questions. Absolutely recommendable.

Very immersive and lively lessons, bite-sized learning.

The English course is an enrichment for my studies, as the structured structure and weekly lessons have significantly improved my English. As we communicate a lot orally in our C1.1 course, you stay active in speaking the language.
