Materials Testing and Failure Analysis for Businesses

The Chair of Materials Science and Testing supports companies with materials-related issues in the areas of development, quality assurance, and damage analysis. We examine materials, components, and damage cases using scientific methods and practical evaluations—from the initial analysis to the identification of possible causes and potential solutions.

Common Questions

We examine damage patterns, fracture surfaces, and material conditions to narrow down the possible causes of failure. In doing so, we take into account, among other factors, the material, microstructure, manufacturing process, loading, and operating conditions.

Microstructure, defects, surface condition, and heat treatment can significantly influence the behavior of a material. Metallographic and microscopic examinations can reveal these factors and allow for their evaluation from a materials science perspective.

We assist in assessing whether a material meets the requirements of a specific application. In doing so, we take into account mechanical properties, operating conditions, potential damage mechanisms, and material-related constraints.

Appropriate testing methods can be used to determine relevant properties of a material or the condition of a component. This data serves as a basis for material comparisons, quality assessments, design considerations, or damage analyses.

Many failure mechanisms result from the interaction of material condition, stress, and the environment. We analyze the observed characteristics and classify them based on possible material-related causes.

Failure mechanisms are not considered in isolation, but are interpreted in the context of material, manufacturing, microstructure, and loading. The goal is to provide a transparent assessment that supports technical decisions and potential measures.

Not every problem requires the same level of testing effort. We help you select appropriate testing methods and develop a practical approach for material testing, damage analysis, or material evaluation.

Our Mission

Axel von Hehl

"Materials science issues can rarely be considered in isolation. The key lies in the interplay between the material, its manufacturing process, microstructure, stress conditions, and operating conditions. This is precisely where our work comes in: We combine scientific methodology with application-oriented evaluation to support companies in damage analysis, testing, and material selection."

The Process for a Request

1.

Inquiry

Please briefly describe your inquiry, the material, the component, and the reason for the investigation.

2.

Preliminary Assessment

We determine which investigations are appropriate and whether the issue can be addressed using the available methods.

3.

Investigation

The samples or components are examined using appropriate testing and analysis methods.

4.

Rating

The results are classified according to materials science and either documented in an appropriate format or discussed together.

How can we help you move forward?

Please feel free to contact us with a brief description of your inquiry. It would be helpful to include details about the material, the component, its usage history or damage history to date, and the tests you would like us to perform.
