GAiST: Back on TV—this time on the red sofa with AI expert Alke Martens
Nursing research from Siegen featured on NDR television: On the show “DAS! Rote Sofa,” the GAiST project provided insights into how artificial intelligence can help older adults live more safely in their daily lives.
The GAiST research project was featured on television once again: this time as a guest on NDR’s “Red Sofa” program, alongside AI expert Alke Martens. During the show, GAiST served as a positive example of how artificial intelligence can be used in a meaningful and practical way in everyday life.
At the heart of the project is an AI-powered smart-home and vital signs monitoring system designed to support older adults in care settings.
Study participant Maria Stehn provided insight into her daily life with the technology. She described sensors and intelligent assistance systems that serve purposes such as stove safety, fall detection, and the monitoring of vital signs. A key point in her account: it’s about safety, not surveillance.
In the segment, Dr. Christian Weber explained that combining the collected data makes it possible to use AI to identify long-term changes and predict health trends. This allows critical developments to be identified early on, before they lead to serious problems. During filming, he was personally on site to answer questions about the use of AI for trend forecasting in the healthcare sector.
The technology is being developed at the University of Siegen in collaboration with partners OFFIS, ESCOS, and MATERNA. It is then introduced to seniors by specialists and integrated into their daily lives.
The TV segment is available in the ARD media library until the end of the year (starting at 26:52): Watch the segment in the ARD media library
