On the Go with Team Spirit, Physical Activity, and a Thirst for Discovery
In ideal weather, our group of nine set out for the Druid Stone above Herkersdorf and Offhausen (city of Kirchen/Sieg). The isolated basalt cone lies about 430 m above sea level and rises about 20 m above its surroundings. During the Thirty Years’ War, part of the summit—which served as a landmark for enemy armies—was leveled; as a result, only about one-third of it remains today.
A place with a powerful presence—and even more powerful stories: Myths and legends surround the Druid Stone. According to tradition, it is said to have been a place of worship and gathering for Celtic druids. Although there is little historical evidence to support this—that is precisely what makes the place so special: you can feel its aura even without “proof.”
The historical traces from more recent times are also fascinating: nature conservation efforts have been underway here since 1869; in May 2006, the Druid Stone was designated a national geotope (one of 77 nationwide, among others).
The best part for everyone: You can even drive your car right up to the base of the rock. For us, however, the motto was: first arrive, then enjoy. The climb to the top was quite a challenge for our team—but we were rewarded with much more relaxed moments on the way back. True to the motto, “Step by step—and then light on our feet on the way back.”
In addition to hiking, we set out to search for geocaches with the help of our “sniffer.” Coordination, a keen eye, and a dash of luck proved invaluable.
The day culminated with a Chinese meal. It was a well-rounded day: out and about together, successful together—and enjoying the moment together at the end. All in all, it was a successful team-building day filled with lots of laughter, a great atmosphere, and a wonderful mix of nature, fun, and enjoyment.
