Department of History
History is more than just a survey of the past: it is about a critical classification of historical phenomena and processes. How is human behavior explained under specific conditions? The subject of history spans a chronological arc over three millennia up to the present day. The thematic spectrum is considerable: political orders and conflicts (e.g. democracies and revolutions), political and social participation (e.g. of women and migrants), the genesis of cultural imprints (e.g. in religious ritual or scientific discourse), and finally the question of the relevance of the past for the present and future. All of these problems are subjected to a methodologically sound analysis.
