Project description

The project "Straf-Erfahrungen: Criminal convictions from the perspective of young people and adolescents" aims at an in-depth analysis of the perception and interpretation of criminal convictions by young people and adolescents. The question of how they process sentences against the background of their respective biographies and identity construction has rarely been analyzed empirically to date. On the other hand, the corresponding interpretations are of central importance in the entire criminal justice process and in political debates on juvenile delinquency. Legislative decisions are also often based on assumptions about the effects of convictions on young people.

Against this background, the research project examines a number of questions.

In order to pursue these questions, a narrative theory approach is pursued (e.g. Lucius-Hoene/Deppermann 2002; Widdershoven 1993). The narrative-theoretical approach avoids axiomatic attributions that refer to the identity of a subject without empirical foundation. It focuses on the analysis of narrative attempts, retellings and re-narratives of a subject, with which his "identity-strategic movements" (Kraus 2000, 170) can be reconstructed.

The project focuses on defendants for whom inpatient placement (juvenile detention or juvenile punishment) is an option. Qualitative interviews are used, which are conducted before and after sentencing. In order to realize the project, legal and socio-educational research skills will be integrated. The greatest possible contrast will be achieved by collecting data in different local contexts.
