Gender, like ethnicity, age, or social status, is one of the fundamental categories that define both our identity and the way we are perceived and positioned in society.  

Building on women’s studies of the 1970s and 1980s—which aimed to make women visible—a multifaceted field of gender studies has emerged that focuses not only on women and femininities but also on men and masculinities. Another branch critically examines the system of binary gender and heteronormativity.     

Gender studies use various theories and methods to examine the role that the category of gender plays and what is understood by “gender” at different times and in different cultures. They explore the significance of gender, gender relations, and gender differences. It observes and analyzes how these are constructed and how they change. At Gestu_S, we view Gender Studies as a research perspective that gives rise to a wide range of gender-specific questions. These questions span various academic disciplines, making Gender Studies an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary field of research.
