Information for Participants in the Preparatory German Language Course (DSH)
Follow these steps to transfer from the DSH preparatory course to your degree program
If you are interested in studying a Bachelor’s program with restricted admission or Master’s program, you must submit an application by its respective application deadline. This also applies if the program is already listed in the admission letter you received after applying for the DSH course.
If you meet all criteria set by the faculty team, your application will be approved, and you will obtain a spot in your desired program. Also, you will receive a new letter of admission for the semester in which you will begin your degree. You can then submit a request to change your program of study within the deadline specified on your new admission letter via unisono.
If you wish to transfer to a program with no admission restrictions, you do not need a new admission letter. You can submit your request to change your program directly via unisono during the University of Siegen’s regular enrollment period.
You can find the application and enrollment deadlines that apply for your desired program on its program page.
To enroll in the preparatory German language course, you were required to book a private health insurance policy. However, if you are under 30 years of age when you begin your degree studies, you will need to change your policy to a statutory health insurance one, so please contact the statutory health insurance provider of your choice and sign up for a student health insurance policy. The start date of your coverage must be the first day of the respective semester (April 1st or October 1st). Your health insurance provider must then submit an electronic confirmation of your health insurance —known as the “M10”—directly to the University of Siegen.
If you are over 30 years of age when you begin your degree, you are not required to take out statutory health insurance. However, you must still contact a statutory health insurance provider so that they can send us the official confirmation of your health insurance. This confirmation is called the “Exemption M10” and, just like a regular M10, must be sent by the statutory health insurance provider to the University of Siegen electronically.
Please note: It usually takes 2-3 business days for an M10 to be logged into our system.
You can find more information about insurance in Germany here.
Please transfer the semester fee for the new semester during the regular re-registration period. Be sure to include your matriculation number as a payment reference, as this is the only way your bank transfer can be matched to your student profile.
You no longer need to pay the German language course fee, even if it still appears on your invoice. The invoice amount will be adjusted so that there is no outstanding balance after your program change.
Please note: For bank transfers from within Germany, it usually takes 2-3 business days for payments to arrive and to be matched to your unisono profile. This applies for instant payments as well.
If you have already passed your German language examination, you can submit a request to change your degree program through your unisono profile. Please upload all required documents to unisono as part of the process. If you have not yet received your official language certificate when you submit your request, the team at the International Registrar's office will unlock the corresponding field in unisono so that you can submit it at a later point within the enrollment period. Without your official certificate, your program change request cannot be accepted.
Once we receive your complete application—including all required documents, your health insurance confirmation, and your payment—the International Registrar's Office team will process your request, re-register you for the new semester, and change your degree program. This will usually take 3–5 business days, after which your status in unisono will be updated.
Please note: Your Deutschland-Semesterticket cannot be renewed until you are fully re-registered. Also, you will not be able to register for courses in your degree program until after your program change. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you submit all documents by the first week of March or September.

Are you currently enrolled at the University of Siegen and would like to switch to a different degree program or change your major? Here's what you need to know.
To switch to a Bachelor's program without restricted admission, you do not need to obtain a new admission letter as long as you have a general university entrance qualification. If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, contact the International Admissions' Team via admission@zv.uni-siegen.de
Also, please note that proficiency in German is a requirement for enrollment in any of our Bachelor's programs. You can find a list of all language certificates we recognize here - see 'Recognized German Language Proficiency Exams': Language Courses to Prepare for College | Universität Siegen
Once you are sure that you meet the requirements, pay the semester tuition fee for the new semester within the re-registration deadline and submit your application to change your degree program via unisono during the regular enrollment period. Please note: You must first re-register for the semester in which you plan to change your program by transferring the semester tuition fee within the re-registration deadline. If you are currently enrolled in a Master’s program at the University of Siegen and are interested in pursuing a Ph.D., you must first find a Ph.D. supervisor, and then register with our Welcome Center for International Researchers. Only after you have signed a supervision agreement can you transfer to a Ph.D. program.
If this step takes longer than expected, you can temporarily de-register from the University of Siegen and re-enroll at a later date, as you generally do not need to remain enrolled at the University of Siegen during your Ph.D.
You can find information about our Welcome Center here: Welcome Center/Start | University of Siegen
If you wish to remain enrolled and have already obtained a signed supervision agreement, please pay the semester fee for the new semester during the regular re-registration period.
