Shape your future at the University of Siegen
The English-language degree program "Embedded Intelligence Nanosystems Engineering (EMINENT)" is offered jointly by 5 universities: University of Siegen, Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU, Greece), NOVA Lisbon (Portugal), University of Orléans (France), and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (Lithuania). The program follows a vertical process chain: from functional nanomaterials to sensors and integrated systems that connect physical and digital realms (the “Internet of Things”). The first semester is held at HMU, providing students with an introduction to nanotechnology. In the second semester, students continue at the University of Siegen, focusing on sensor technology and data analysis. Beginning in the third semester, students enter a specialization phase, selecting one of five focus areas for advanced study:
1) University of Siegen: Embedded intelligent sensor technology
2) HMU: Functional materials with opto-electronic properties
3) NOVA: Natural materials and biosensors
4) Vilnius Tech: Advanced sensor systems and data processing
5) University of Orléans: Internet of Things and robotics
Career Prospects
EMINENT prepares students for professional roles in the evolving fields of embedded intelligence and nanosystems technology. Depending on their chosen specialization, students study functional materials, embedded intelligent sensor technology, biosensor technology, Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, sensor systems, and data processing. The program combines this technical education with developing entrepreneurship, social skills, and intercultural collaboration competencies.
1) Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or an equivalent course of study with content related to the EMINENT program (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering or similar) with at least 180 ECTS. Once converted into the German grading system using the modified Bavarian formula, the translated final grade should correspond to a 2.7 or better. The bachelor's degree must have been obtained at a nationally recognized university and be recognized by the national legislation of all partner universities. If the proof of qualification (bachelor's degree) is not yet available at the time of application, conditional admission may be granted. In this case, an official declaration from the home university must be submitted, stating the expected graduation date and the courses still to be completed. The degree certificate and Transcript of Academic Records must be submitted by 1 August of the respective year to complete the admission process. If the original language of the document is not English, an officially certified translation must also be submitted.
2) English language proficiency at B2 level, certified by a language certificate issued by an official test center (no online home tests). Accepted tests: TOEFL iBT (minimum score 93), IELTS Academic (minimum score 6.5, with no individual score below 6), PTE Academic 63, Cambridge English Qualifications (minimum score 178) or Oxford Test of English Advanced (minimum score 137). Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificates are not accepted. The result of the test should be available at least 14 days after the application deadline. Applicants who have obtained their bachelor's (or master's) degree in an English-language degree program in an EU country or in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the USA, or Switzerland do not require a language certificate. For applicants from countries where English is the ONLY official language, no language certificate is required either.
3) The following information must be uploaded with the application form:
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty in the bachelor's degree program. Alternatively, one letter of recommendation from an academic teacher from the bachelor's program and one letter of recommendation from an external person (e.g. employer) can be submitted, as long as the latter holds a doctoral degree.
- Information on acquired soft skills, publications, and relevant experience (e.g., professional experience) — optional
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- Copy of passport
- Additional documents may be required for enrollment and VISA applications (APS,...)
Applications must be submitted via unisono.
The version of the examination regulations valid at the time of submission applies.
Examination Regulations/Structure of the Master's Degree Program/Module Handbook
The examination regulations (Prüfungsordnungen, or PO) define the basic structures of a degree program (e.g., admission requirements and content to be studied). Upon enrolment in the first semester, students are automatically subject to the current version of the PO. This means that even if the PO changes during the course of study, the original version according to which you enrolled remains valid (unless the PO is revoked).
The respective structure of the master's degree program is determined by the mobility program and the selected specialization. It is part of the module handbook, which is attached to the PO.
Supplementary provisions and details on each module can be found in the module handbook (e.g., requirements for taking a written examination or content-related information on the modules/events, ...).
Before the start of the lecture period, we recommend that you review the degree plan for your degree program so that you know which modules are planned for the start of your studies.
Further information on studying at EMINENT
Every applicant automatically applies for a scholarship. The scholarship runs for up to 2 years. Scholarship holders receive a monthly lump sum of € 1400 to cover travel and living expenses. An interim evaluation takes place after the first year: In order to receive the scholarship for the full term of two years, the scholarship holder must have completed the modules of the first two semesters with an average grade of 2.7 (in the German grading system). Students who have been admitted to the EMINENT program but have not received a scholarship can participate at their own expense.
