Social problems such as violence, drug use, excessive media consumption, behavioural problems, bullying or radicalization are usually seen as educational problems in children and young people and are handed over to educational institutions. Among other things, education is given the task of dealing with violations of norms and countering them through social/educational action. To what extent can we therefore speak of education as a central instance of social control? And how exactly does education function as an institution of problem solving and social control?
The conference is dedicated to the relationship between education and social control and focuses on a practice-theoretical perspective that can, among other things, make visible how social control is actually enacted in social/educational contexts and how unexpected consequences and constellations may arise. Together with selected, relevant researchers, central questions, methodological challenges and related research perspectives will be discussed.
