Annual Conference of the German Ethics Council "Successful Solidarity"

Last week, Prof. Dr. Nils Goldschmidt took part in the annual meeting of the German Ethics Council. As a member of the German Ethics Council and spokesperson for the preparatory working group, he moderated the opening panel on the question "What does solidarity mean?".

We live in turbulent times. Social polarization, social inequalities and global crises are putting social cohesion to the test. Technological upheavals and geopolitical conflicts are exacerbating the challenges facing the community - while our everyday lives are becoming increasingly individualized, particularly as a result of changing digital forms of communication. How much solidarity is possible under these conditions - and how can it succeed? You can find more information here.

Prof. Dr. Nils Goldschmidt new Director of the Global Ethic Institute

Professor Dr. Nils Goldschmidt will take over the full-time management of the Global Ethic Institute from February 1, 2025.

What characterizes a sustainable economy that promotes human diversity and social cohesion? How can sustainable development goals and economic success be meaningfully linked? Goldschmidt will also be researching, publishing and teaching on these pressing questions from Tübingen in future.

"My vision is based on an understanding of global ethics that combines economic development and social responsibility. The Global Ethic Institute offers a place for dialog and education, but also for optimism and courage for social innovation. "I would like to make my contribution to this from February 2025," says Goldschmidt. "Because radical problems don't need radical solutions."

You can find the entire press release from the Global Ethic Institute here.

Guest article by Prof. Dr. Nils Goldschmidt for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung

Under the title "Donald Trump's path to servitude", Prof. Dr. Nils Goldschmidt analyzes the effects of Trump's political despotism on a liberal democracy and market economy. He used "The Road to Serfdom", Friedrich August von Hayek's classic from 1944, as a guide for his interpretation.

Description of the research focus areas and list of focus areas

An "isolating" economics, which detaches economic processes from the social, political and cultural context in the interest of the applicability of certain formal methods, runs the risk of not adequately capturing all aspects of economic reality. It needs to be supplemented by a socio-economic, contextual perspective. The main objective of the Chair's research is to relate the economy to its social environment and to focus on the interfaces between the economic system and other social subsystems. Institutional approaches seem to us to be particularly suitable for achieving this. In addition, we consider the tradition of thought of regulatory economics and the concept of the social market economy to be highly compatible with contextual approaches in economics. The consideration of social, cultural and normative factors in the analysis of economic processes, as practiced in both traditional and modern regulatory economics, can be seen as an important precursor to contextual economics. Furthermore, we see a great importance of theoretical-historical research to better understand the context in which economic ideas develop.

Presentation of economic content in textbooks

The aim of the study is to investigate the presentation of economic content in 40 textbooks of the social science subject group of secondary levels I and II of different federal states. Innovations compared to previous studies are 1. the differentiation of textual material into presentation and position texts, 2. the consideration of the tasks and their criteria-led analysis and 3. the analysis of the teachers' volumes and thus supposed sample solutions for the tasks examined.
