Moving costs

W1, W2, and W3 Professorships

The University of Siegen grants professors a one-time lump-sum relocation allowance during appointment negotiations. A prerequisite for this is the professor’s willingness to relocate. This policy is intended to ensure that payments are made only to those who are not only willing to relocate but who actually do so.
The corresponding lump sum is listed in the table below.

Research Assistants

Research assistants who move to the University of Siegen together with the professor also have the option of applying for a lump-sum relocation allowance. The lump sum can only be granted if the position was specifically promised to the employee during the appointment negotiations and the contract has a minimum term of 3 years. Funding is provided from the budget of the appointed professorship.

Note
If the employee moves alone, the “single person lump sum” is granted. If, within the exclusion period, the partner and children also establish their primary residence at the place of employment and have moved, the lump sum is granted according to the actual family status (at that time). The difference from the lump sum already paid will then be paid out. The aforementioned grace period continues to apply.

Requirements for payment of the allowance
Payment is made after the move is completed and must be applied for at the University of Siegen within the exclusion period using the appropriate form and a copy of the registration certificate.

  • The new residence must be the employee’s primary residence
  • The previous residence must not be located in the new place of employment (relocation area)—the distance between the new residence and the new place of employment must be more than 30 km on a route normally traveled
  • The distance between the new residence and the place of employment must be within a reasonable distance—the distance between the new residence and the place of employment must not exceed 30 km on a route normally traveled

An advance payment (max. 80% of the lump sum) is possible upon request

Exclusion/Reimbursement
If the promised move does not take place within the granted period, the employee is obligated to reimburse the lump-sum payment. This also applies if the person leaves their civil service or employment relationship with the University of Siegen before the end of the term following the start of employment.

W2, W3 professorships; W1 professorships with tenure track 5 years
W1 professorships without tenure track, research assistants 1 year

The period begins when the offer takes effect!

Relocation from abroad
If relocatingfrom abroad to the University of Siegen, an additional relocation allowance is granted in addition to the above-mentioned lump sums

Intra-European relocations €1,500
Non-European moves €3,000
