What does the Master's program in Psychology look like?
Overview of the special features of the Master's in Psychology
The Master's offers a core curriculum of versatile knowledge and methods, as well as their practical implementation in application contexts. Separate modules are offered for the particularly popular areas of business psychology, research and science communication and psychological intervention. In addition, the module Psychology in the Context of Health, Development and Social Change allows you to link previously acquired knowledge and methods with social issues. The compulsory elective module gives you the opportunity to set your own individual focus within psychology, or even another subject area for an interdisciplinary perspective.
This website provides detailed information about the Master's, from the general conditions for applying to information about starting your studies and, of course, the subject content.

within certain deadlines. You can find instructions here.
The courses of a semester are usually visible to students in unisono 10 weeks before the start of lectures - however, it is not yet possible to register for them. You should first get an overview, e.g. via the course catalog of your degree program, before the start of the registration period.
When registering for courses, pay attention to the module assignments in the structure tree and check whether you meet the requirements set out in the module handbook.
You can reserve individual courses via unisono and display them in a timetable to see whether the courses can be taken without overlaps. Please note, however, that reservations are not enrollments!
Students complete a total of 12 weeks of practical work experience.
Duration: Students work for a total of 330 hours, either consecutively or in two parts, in a professional field of psychology. This is based on an average working time of 27.5 hours per week, resulting in a total of 12 weeks. The internship can be divided into a maximum of two parts, which may not last less than 2 weeks. Either two internships with different content totaling 12 weeks (e.g. 6 weeks each) or one internship of 12 weeks can be completed.
Report: A further 30 hours are estimated for the accompanying reading of literature and the preparation of an internship report. In this report, the internship experience is reviewed by reflecting on one's own actions and examining the applicability of psychological findings to solve practical professional tasks.
Timing: As a rule, internships take place during the semester break. The internship should be completed by the beginning of the lecture period of the 4th semester. The working hours depend on the requirements of the internship institution.
Supervision: The internships are generally supervised by a trained psychologist (with a Master's or Diplom degree in psychology) working at the internship institution. If there are no psychologists working at the institution, alternatives can be discussed with the student advisory service.
Institution: The practical work experience can be completed at all private and public institutions in Germany and abroad that are suitable for providing the student with an insight into practical work experience. Activities as a student assistant within research projects and practice-related courses (e.g. instruction of social skills training) can be recognized as a professional internship. Recognition of work as a student assistant as a professional internship is only possible up to a maximum of 6 CP. If the aim is to work as a psychotherapist, the internship should be completed in an appropriate institution.
You can find the relevant documents for the internship here.
From the winter semester 2023/24, students will submit their complete internship booklet (i.e. including internship report(s)) in digital form as a PDF file by email to praktikum@psychologie.uni-siegen.de
to the internship coordinator Dr. Kristian Kleinke.
Name the file according to the following pattern: Matrikelnummer_Modulnummer.pdf (e.g. 123456_5PSYMA08.pdf) and please submit the report in PDF format.
If you have split your internship and have to create several reports, please combine them into a single PDF file.
You should also submit the original internship booklet to the Psychology Examination Office (AR-NB 0136):
University of Siegen
Fakultät II - Department of Psychology
Prüfungsamt
Adolf-Reichwein-Straße 2a
57076 Siegen
Please make sure that the submitted internship certificates contain an original stamp of the institution (no copies, scans, etc.) and an original signature of the supervising or approved person.
Important:
- The internship documents are only formally deemed to have been submitted once we have received the originals. The LP can only be booked once the originals have been submitted.
- One original internship booklet must remain in our archives. If you would like another original for your records, please submit two copies of the work placement booklet.
It is not necessary to register for the SL of the internship module in unisono. The credit points will be credited after the examination office has checked the documents.
In their Master's thesis, students generally carry out an empirical study on a psychological issue, which is fully processed and reported on. It is usually written in the fourth semester.
You can find a list of current Master's thesis topics for the Master's degree program in Psychology in the regularly updated Moodle course Theses in Psychology. If you are interested in one of the topics, please get in touch with the named contact person. In this Moodle course, all professorships of the Institute of Psychology list their currently available Master's thesis topics. These Master's theses can only be worked on by students of the Master's program in Psychology. Students of other degree programs should contact the lecturers directly.
The following rules apply to the application process:
- You can apply for a topic or for a place with a lecturer to start work on their thesis at any time
- You may only apply for one thesis topic at a time, i.e. only contact one teacher
- The respective supervisor will reply within approximately one week. If you receive an acceptance, you have the place
- If you receive a rejection, apply to your second choice. Make sure that your newly requested topic has not already been marked as "assigned"
- If you want to study within the standard period of study, you should have registered for a topic by 15.07. in your 3/4 semester at the latest
Admission: You can only be admitted to the Master's thesis if you can prove that you have at least 60 CP. Please submit the application for admission to the Master's thesis (original) to the Psychology Examination Office. The application should be submitted 1-2 weeks before the planned start of work. Plan the processing period so that the end of the processing period falls on an opening day of the examination office. This ensures that you have the opportunity to hand in your thesis to the Examinations Office by the last day of your deadline. If the topic of the Master's thesis is changed again after admission, a declaration of consent from the first reviewer must be submitted (this should be done before the thesis is submitted!).
Time and scope: The processing time is six months. As a rule, the Master's thesis should not exceed 80 pages (incl. bibliography, excl. appendix). The topic of the Master's thesis can only be returned once within four weeks of the start of the processing period. In accordance with Section 11 (7) of the departmental examination regulations, two hard copies of the Master's thesis and two digital copies (on a digital storage medium labeled with the student's matriculation number and name without password protection) must be submitted to the Chair of the Examination Board or the office designated by him/her by the deadline. For the digital form, a further identical digital version of the thesis should be submitted, which contains only the text of the thesis. This means that there should be a second PDF on the storage medium that only contains the text (summary, introduction, methods, results, discussion), i.e. without cover sheet, list of contents and abbreviations, bibliography, declaration of plagiarism.
Written assurance: The following fully completed, signed and dated written assurance must be attached to the thesis as the last page: Written assurance
Programs not used are to be confirmed with a "0" (Not used)! The whitelist is for information purposes only and does not have to be printed.
Assessors: The candidate can propose a first and a second reviewer. The second assessor can be a member of an Institute of Psychology at another university.
Further information can be found in the examination regulations. You can find these and other forms here.
Students have the opportunity to take part in the structured pre-doctoral program within the Master's degree course in Psychology. The aim of this program is for students to study the subject area in which they plan to do their doctorate after completing their Master's degree. In particular, the student deals with scientific work in this subject area.
The student of the pre-doctoral program decides on a subject area of psychology in which corresponding modules are taken and chooses a professor as supervisor accordingly. This can be one of the basic psychological subjects represented by professors at the University of Siegen or clinical psychology or business psychology. Please only apply to one professorship at a time - you may only apply to another professorship for this module if you are rejected.
The following modules are selected as part of the pre-doctoral program according to the chosen subject area:
- Pre-doctoral module: Within the compulsory elective area "Supplement", the student chooses the pre-doctoral module (5PSYMA13). This means that he or she works in the research group of the supervising professor and receives mentoring from him or her. The mentoring includes, for example, an overview of potential subject areas for a doctorate, consolidation of scientific work skills, consolidation of special research methods in the chosen area, discussion of research findings in the chosen area. A project report (8-10 pages in length) is prepared and graded.
- If the chosen subject area is a basic psychological subject, the seminars in the module "Basic specialization" (5PSYMA03/2) must be chosen in the respective subject area or related subject areas if possible.
- Research-oriented specialization (5PSYMA05): The seminars in this module should be chosen from the chosen subject area or related subject areas.
- Research and science communication (5PSYMA06/2): The project work is completed in the chosen subject area.
- Internship (5PSYMA08): The internship is completed as a research internship or as a professional field internship, depending on the chosen subject area.
- Master's thesis (5PSYMA09): The Master's thesis is completed in the chosen subject area.
Prerequisites for admission to the pre-doctoral module and thus to the entire pre-doctoral program are outstanding performance in the degree program as well as a positive recommendation and the consent of the supervising professor. The decision on admission is made by the Examination Board.
Interested students must apply to take the structured pre-doctoral program as a supplementary subject. According to §13 of the FPO-M (2020), the application documents include a letter of motivation, an overview of achievements, a letter of recommendation and the confirmation of the supervisor. Please submit the documents to the examination board in good time, as this is where the decision on admission is made. If you are admitted, have your achievements certified using the form provided.
Thank you for your interest in a stay abroad during your psychology studies at the University of Siegen! The Department of Psychology would like to support you as much as possible in gaining international experience.
As part of your psychology studies at the University of Siegen, you have many different opportunities to gain experience abroad. These include:
- A semester at a partner university in Europe with Erasmus+
- A semester at a partner university outside Europe with Promos
- Completing an internship within Europe
- One semester at any university as a freemover
- Master's thesis at a foreign university
Stays abroad are not limited to other European countries, but can take place anywhere in the world. In principle, stays abroad are not limited to certain formats; a variety of options and possibilities are conceivable. As a general rule, if you would like to gain experience abroad as part of your studies and are willing to invest time and energy, a stay abroad will be possible.
General information
When should I go abroad?
A mobility semester is included in the curriculum in the 3rd semester. This means that there is a structured plan for planning a stay abroad in the 3rd semester, as to how you can adapt your course of study in order to stay within the standard period of study. However, you can deviate from this suggestion as well as from the 3rd semester - in this case, it is particularly useful to seek advice from the study coordinatorat an early stage.
for advice at an early stage.
Of course, you can also extend your studies and, for example, go abroad in the 5th semester and write your thesis there.
When should I start organizing my stay abroad?
Basically, the earlier the better! However, this does not mean that you cannot organize a stay abroad at short notice.
Opportunities for stays abroad
Erasmus+
Erasmus+ gives you the opportunity to study at a partner university in Europe and benefit from Erasmus funding. There is currently an Erasmus+ cooperation agreement with the following partners:
- University of Klagenfurt, Austria
- Université de Picardie Jules Verne in Amiens, France
There is also the possibility with the Erasmus coordinator Prof. Kai Horstmann
to initiate a cooperation with another European university and spend the semester there.
The key to participating in Erasmus+ is a learning agreement in which courses amounting to 15 ECTS are already defined before your stay, which you take at the partner university and which will be recognized after your return.
Contact the study coordinationoffice early (ideally in the 2nd semester)
to prepare for your stay, adapt your course of study accordingly and prepare the details of the Learning Agreement in good time.
Please note the application deadline for Erasmus+. You can find all information about the application here. The International Student Affairs
of the University of Siegen provides further information and links to the relevant application portals.
Promos
Promos gives you the opportunity to study at a partner university outside Europe and benefit from Promos financial support. There are currently partnerships for psychology in the following countries:
- America
- Japan
- Mexico
It is also possible to initiate a cooperation with the Erasmus coordinator Prof. Kai Horstmann
to initiate a cooperation with another university and spend the semester there.
The key to participating in Promos is a learning agreement in which courses amounting to 15 ECTS are already defined before your stay, which you will take at the partner university and which will be recognized after your return.
Contact the study coordinatorearly (ideally in the 2nd semester)
to prepare for your stay, adjust your course of study accordingly and prepare the details of the Learning Agreement in good time.
Please note the application period for Promos. All information about the application can be found here. The International Student Affairs
of the University of Siegen provides further information and refers to the relevant portals for application.
Internship abroad
You have the opportunity to complete both your orientation internship and your professional internship in another European country. For the certification of a BQT-I internship, you will find here
a corresponding English form. The criteria within the certificate also represent the requirements for recognition. Discuss your planned internship abroad with the internship coordinator(Dr. Kristian Kleinke) as early as possible, but in any case before starting the internship.
In any case, suitable proof must be provided that the psychotherapists working in the institution have completed at least 3 years of further training in psychotherapy that meet the criteria of the EuroPsy Specialist Certificate in Psychotherapy and are authorized to practice psychotherapy in their country. Suitable evidence for an equivalence check (e.g. copy of the EuroPsy Specialist Certificate in Psychotherapy from a supervisor) must be enclosed with the internship documents.
Please note that the recognition of internships abroad is not regulated uniformly throughout Germany; this is particularly relevant if you are aiming for a clinical Master's degree.
An official statement and FAQ from the Düsseldorf district government can be found here.
Freemover
If you would like to spend a semester abroad without the obligations and associated funding from Erasmus+ or Promos, you have the option of organizing your semester abroad independently. Registration is not handled by International Student Affairs at the University of Siegen, but you can still find specific information for your preparation and planning on the Freemover subpage.
Before your semester abroad, please contact the study coordination office to discuss your course of study and to clarify whether you can have courses abroad credited towards your degree.
Master's thesis
You can also write your Master's thesis at a foreign university. This requires good advice and consultation with a supervisor at the University of Siegen. Ideally, you will find a supervisor at the University of Siegen who will supervise your thesis abroad. It is also possible that you will be involved in an international project with lecturers from the University of Siegen. If you are interested in this, please also contact the study coordination office or the Erasmus representative.
Planning your stay abroad
If you only know that you want to go abroad, but do not yet know how exactly you should plan it, first answer the following questions for yourself:
- What do you hope to gain from a stay abroad?
- When do you want to go abroad? (in which year and which semester?)
- What do you want to learn when you go abroad?
- Are you willing or able to study for longer?
- What financial support do you already have available? (i.e. how much money do you have available per month when you are abroad? This will then determine which regions and what further support you will need).
- Which language do you want to speak?
- In which region of the world/Europe should your stay ideally take place? List at least three preferences; assume that everything is possible.
Then contact the Erasmus coordinator or the study coordinator.
What our students say
" My semester abroad in Klagenfurt was very enriching, as I was able to learn a lot of new things, got to know many people from different countries and felt very comfortable. Above all, the proximity to the lake and the mountains, my daily bike rides through the city and to the university made my time here unforgettable. "
Further questions
The contact person in Psychology, especially for technical questions and discussion of the course of studies, is the study coordination office. To initiate cooperation with other universities abroad, please contact the Erasmus Coordinator of Psychology Prof. Kai Horstmann

Questions about the degree program and the content focus in Siegen
The two-year Master's program deepens and expands the basic psychological skills and knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's program. The focus of the Master's program is on psychology in the context of health, development and social change and allows a strong focus on research (as preparation for a possible doctorate).
It is a small degree course with very good individual support (very good student/teacher ratio) and a broad insight into the various sub-disciplines of psychology. Particular attention is paid to psychology in the context of health, development and social change as well as work and organizational psychology.
The course is only possible full-time and the standard period of study is four semesters. The course comprises 8 modules as well as the internship and the Master's thesis. As part of the 8 modules, there are additional compulsory electives (e.g. other subjects or pre-doctoral modules). Further information can be found in the departmental examination regulations for Master's degree programs in Psychology (FPO-M, § 8).
You can choose the pre-doctoral module within the compulsory elective area "Supplement". In this module, you will work in the supervising professor's research group and receive mentoring from them. The mentoring includes, for example, an overview of potential subject areas for a doctorate, consolidation of scientific work skills, consolidation of special research methods in the chosen area, discussion of research findings in the chosen area. A project report (8 - 10 pages) is prepared and graded. (FPO-M, § 13)
Questions about the supplementary subject
Courses of a module with 9 CP (consisting of a graded PL and up to two SL) can be selected from the courses offered in all Master's degree programs at the University of Siegen. The respective lecturer and the respective examination board must allow the course to be taken. As part of the credit transfer procedure, a complete module (which meets the above criteria) can also be recognized by another university. 9 credit points from the Language Center, for example, cannot be transferred, as this is not a module and not a degree program. If in doubt, please ask the Examinations Office beforehand.
Questions about admission requirements, application, selection procedure and admission to the Master's degree program
