Anxiety Therapy in Virtual Worlds

Why do anxieties sometimes persist even when people have positive experiences? A research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) is investigating how new technologies can improve the treatment of anxiety disorders—and what role learning plays in this process.

New Approaches to Anxiety Therapy

Overcoming Fear with Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR)

Symbolbild Experimentelle Psychopathologie

As part of a 36-month project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), we are investigating how the treatment of anxiety disorders can be optimized through the use of virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR), and why people “cling” to their fears despite positive experiences.
The central research question of the project is how people process new experiences during therapy and to what extent these learning experiences contribute to reducing anxiety in the long term—or why this is not the case.
