The University of Siegen Celebrates "20 Years as a Family-Friendly University"
The Family Services Office at the University of Siegen is celebrating a special anniversary with a ceremony: 20 years ago, it was certified for the first time as a family-friendly university. To mark this occasion , the University of Siegen invites you to a celebratory event on Tuesday, November 10, starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Obergraben Seminar Center (Unteres Schloss Campus, Obergraben 25).
What does “family-friendly university” mean?
Since 2006, the University of Siegen has held the title “family-friendly university,” awarded by berufundfamilie Service GmbH. Based on its initial commitment and the target agreements resulting from six re-audits since then, the university has developed family-friendly work schedules, comprehensive counseling for employees and students with family responsibilities, childcare options, and much more. The celebratory event on November 10 is an opportunity to look back on this development, share experiences, and discuss together the future of balancing work or studies with family life.
About the Program
The afternoon will begin at 2:00 p.m. with opening remarks by Rector Prof. Dr. Stefanie Reese and Dr. Elisabeth Heinrich, Head of the Office for Equal Opportunity and the University of Siegen’s Equal Opportunities Officer, who will review the milestones of the family-friendly University of Siegen.
At 2:15 p.m., Martin Heyer from berufundfamilie Service GmbH will provide insights into the “family-friendly university audit.”
The highlight of the ceremony, beginning at 2:45 p.m., will be a presentation by political scientist, author, and content creator Jo Lücke titled “Twenty Years Ahead—What Now? Family-Friendliness as a Social Responsibility.” The speaker will outline the conditions needed beyond the university to ensure that caregiving responsibilities do not become a professional disadvantage.
A get-together starting at 4:15 p.m. will then offer the chance to mingle and celebrate over drinks and snacks.
Supporting Program for Families and Children
For children, there is a creative childcare program provided by the flexible childcare service “Flexi.” Daniela Hilgendorff from the City of Siegen’s Family Office will provide information on regional services for children and families.
