The Chair of Product Development focuses on the development of innovative products and manufacturing technologies, from the initial idea to a functional prototype. Research and teaching combine traditional product development methods with modern approaches to additive manufacturing, digitalization, and experimental validation. Together with partners from academia and industry, we develop practical solutions to current challenges in design, manufacturing, and product development.
Our Research Profile
Research at the Chair of Product Development focuses on the development and application of innovative product development methods and modern manufacturing technologies. A particular emphasis is placed on additive manufacturing, whose entire development process—from component design through manufacturing to experimental characterization—is scientifically investigated. In the field of metallic and polymer additive manufacturing, research addresses issues related to process development, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM), material characterization, and the mechanical properties of additively manufactured components. The focus is on both the development of new application areas and the investigation of structure-property relationships and failure mechanisms.
Another key research focus is on sustainable manufacturing concepts and the use of recycled materials for additive manufacturing. The goal is to combine resource-efficient manufacturing processes with innovative product concepts. The experimental investigations are supplemented by numerical methods and range from material characterization and the analysis of component behavior to the validation of new design and manufacturing concepts.
