New ways to quit smoking
Retraining automatic processes when smoking
Tobacco addiction is still one of the most common substance use disorders in Germany. Although the negative consequences of smoking are well known and many smokers wish to quit, relapse rates are high even after successful treatment. One reason for this may be that not only conscious or rational aspects play a role in smoking, but automatic processes also influence behavior to a large extent. The ANTARES project (broadly effective substance addiction therapy in the digital society using virtual reality-based systems) is investigating new ways of quitting smoking by using various new technologies (e.g. virtual reality, smartphone applications) alongside conventional methods in order to change automatic processes associated with smoking and thus support smokers on their path to abstinence.
