Notes on grammar books and dictionaries

  • Grammar books can also be purchased second-hand without any disadvantages.
  • When buying a second-hand dictionary, it is essential to ensure that it does not contain any entries or markings.
  • The Stowasser edition from 2016 is recommended for Latin courses. This edition is also used to practise using the dictionary in the course.
  • The use of older editions or other dictionaries is generally possible. In this case, however, students must learn the relevant content and how to use it independently.
  • Dictionaries that:
    • contain entries or markings
    • contain additional grammatical explanations or tables

  • You only need a pen and your dictionary for the exam.

Language certificates from private institutes

  • Language certificates from private institutes are examined on a case-by-case basis, but are generally not recognized, even if formal equivalence is stated. The reason for this is that it cannot be ruled out that financial aspects may have an influence on examination results.
  • If you have completed or are planning to complete a vacation course at a private institute, the knowledge of Latin or Ancient Greek acquired there can be proven by an examination at the University of Siegen .
  • For individual clarification, you are welcome to contact us by e-mail or visit a consultation hour.
  • Please inform yourself independently about the seriousness of the respective institute. No individual assessments or recommendations can be given for private providers.
