Your future begins in Siegen
In the supplementary subject Film Studies, you will learn about the history, aesthetics and theories of film close to the material. We watch and analyze films and film excerpts in seminars. You will get to know a wide range of popular films, international genres and experimental art films - from arthouse cinema to blockbusters. In addition to classic feature films and documentaries, we also cover cinematic media such as videos on platforms and film in social media. Students about the Film Studies program

Hooray, I'm studying film!
What makes a good story and how do you tell it in such a way that the audience stays interested? This question has been on my mind ever since I attended a professional training course on the subject. I happily read books on screenwriting, tried to discover the stages of the hero's journey in films and divided stories into three acts just for fun.
But over time, I realized that my thirst for knowledge was too great and that these gimmicks weren't able to quench it. Could a degree course do the trick? At the "Open University" at the Lower Castle in Siegen, I asked for advice on subject combinations and was immediately impressed by the courses offered by the Media Studies Department. That's exactly what I wanted to learn!
So I took the plunge into the adventure of a "second degree" - and now find myself in lectures on film and image analysis, studying dramaturgy more intensively than ever before (my absolute dream!), trying out photography and image editing with Photoshop, training my scientific thinking and enjoying the fact that my knowledge of films and media is growing from week to week. I have already been able to apply many new insights to my life and my work in the media sector. I find the interaction between students and lecturers to be friendly, informal and approachable.
I think it's great that the course perfectly combines theory and practice; if you want, you can gain even more practical experience in the numerous student initiatives. It is also possible to take part in other academic events. I attended a conference organized by the Screenplay Research Network, where I was able to get a taste of research and learn even more about screenplays. Great!
Incidentally, I chose the University of Siegen because I had already completed my first degree here and have many fond memories of it. My thirst for knowledge is well catered for here. Hooray, I'm studying film!
The supplementary subject can only be chosen in conjunction with a core subject in study models B and D of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities!
