TOTAL E-QUALITY
The University of Siegen was first awarded the TOTAL E-QUALITY award in 2009 for its personnel and organizational policy geared towards equal opportunities and diversity and has been recertified five times since then. In the last two certifications in 2021 and 2024, the additional diversity rating was also awarded.
The TOTAL E-QUALITY award stands for equal opportunities with an intersectional and inclusive approach. It encompasses all dimensions of diversity with a strong focus on gender equality and is awarded by the TOTAL E-QUALITY Deutschland e. V. association in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Past certifications
The TOTAL E-QUALITY award is valid for three years. After this period, the University of Siegen will reapply and provide evidence of the sustainable impact of its measures and further progress towards becoming an equal opportunity university.
The sixth award of the certificate took place on 14.11.2024. The jury's justification for awarding the certificate states that the sustainable anchoring of the equal opportunities strategy based on a comprehensive understanding of anti-discrimination is clear. Equal opportunities objectives are firmly integrated into central management tools such as quality management.
It was also praised that a campaign was launched at the University of Siegen during the last application period with "#WirSindAnti - ANTI-Diskriminierung", which aims to raise awareness among all university members and make the complaints structures and contact points known. A newly established task force will evaluate the effectiveness of the existing structures for protection against abuse of power.
On October 26, 2021, the University was awarded the TOTAL E-QUALITY certificate for an equal opportunities-oriented personnel policy for the fifth time, for the first time with the additional award for diversity and an additional award for sustainability. The jury's statement emphasized, among other things: "At the University of Siegen, equality is understood as cross-sectional work and is located at management level. It is a central component of university development strategies and efforts to achieve this are institutionalized at all organizational levels. There is a comprehensive understanding of potential mechanisms of exclusion, which are actively countered. The University of Siegen can demonstrate convincing and goal-oriented measures in all fields of action. The majority of these have been established for a long time and are constantly being developed further. Fortunately, the quality of the measures is ensured by a dedicated evaluation unit."
On 31 October 2018, the University of Siegen was once again awarded the TOTAL -E-QUALITY award, making it the fourth time it has received the award following successful applications in 2009, 2012 and 2015.
In the jury's statement, the long-standing and sustainable conceptual and institutional anchoring of gender equality at the university was particularly praised. The consistent expansion of the career and personnel development area in recent years, the establishment of the Prorectorates Educational Pathways and Diversity and the planned dovetailing of gender equality offers with the university's diversity management, which is currently being established, were also highlighted.
The University of Siegen has once again been awarded the TOTAL -E-QUALITY 2015 award, making it the third time it has received the award following its successful applications in 2009 and 2012.
"The University of Siegen has been recognized above all for its many innovative individual measures, which combine to create an impressive overall impression," was the jury's verdict in its justification for awarding the award. In detail, the new regulations for appointment procedures, various career-promoting events organized by the Women Career Service, evaluations of equal opportunities measures and the university's new equal opportunities concept were mentioned. However, the university's certified commitment to family friendliness, including the topic of care, and the events for fathers were also cited as reasons for the jury's decision. "Instruments for organizational development and shaping a gender-friendly organizational culture appear mature," said the jury. "The integration of gender studies in research and teaching has been improved once again. In the field of moral harassment, sexualized discrimination/violence, there are also a variety of preventive measures, supplemented by series of events."
In 2012, the University of Siegen was awarded the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for the second time for its success in equal opportunities policy.
The jury based its decision on the consolidation and meaningful expansion of the existing equality measures at the University of Siegen. The significant increase in the proportion of women in deaneries and faculty management as well as in professorships and habilitations was highlighted. According to the jury, the university's particular strengths lie in its family-friendly organization, the promotion of academic careers for women and in teaching. Measures such as the gender certificate, the women-specific mentoring program FraMeS, the teaching of key competencies and soft skills to all key players, the inclusion of both genders in family policy and the integration of gender in research and teaching were cited as "outstanding".
The University of Siegen was awarded the TOTAL E-QUALITY award for the first time on 22 June 2009 in Munich - together with 36 other organizations from business, science and administration. The decisive factors for the award were the anchoring of equal opportunities in the policy papers, gender issues in teaching and equal opportunity recruitment and development. Special mention was made of the Center for Gender Studies (Gestu_S), which has existed since 2007, the Women Career Service and the cross-group mentoring program for women planned for 2009.
