Generating Competitive Advantages in an Altering Market: The Economic Impact of Self-Publishing on Traditional Book Publishers

The project examines strategies of self-publishers in the book industry and strategies of traditional book publishers in the context of developments in the self-publishing market. It examines the factors that lead to self-publishing becoming established in the book industry alongside publication by traditional publishers and which strategies of production and distribution self-publishing authors pursue. Based on this, the project looks at which potentials from the self-publishing market are already being used by traditional book publishers or can be utilized in the future.

How are films and series created and what role do organizational structures, power, communication and collaboration play in the process?

This dissertation examines the organizational structural and hierarchical dynamics in moving image production and shows how creative processes, economic requirements and technological developments are intertwined.
The focus is on questions such as:
  • How are production processes in film, TV and streaming organized?
  • What formal and informal hierarchies characterize collaboration?
  • How do management structures influence efficiency, creativity and freedom of decision?
  • What new models are emerging as a result of digitalization and innovative production practices?
The aim of the research project is to make structures visible, analyze the distribution of power and roles and identify options for action for a sustainable, collaborative production culture. In this way, the work makes a contribution to understanding the moving image industry in the field of tension between tradition, innovation and transformation.
