Internship or employer for a bachelor's degree program in civil engineering?

How is a dual or work-integrated degree program organized?

In terms of content, a dual or work-integrated degree program does not differ from a “standard” bachelor’s degree program in civil engineering.
The courses and exams are the same. However, in a dual or work-integrated degree program, the coursework is spread out differently—for example, in the dual program, the first two semesters are spread over a total of four semesters. As a result, you’ll only be at the university 2 or 3 days a week during the lecture period.
The remaining days—as well as the lecture-free period—are set aside for off-site training provided by the Construction Training and Continuing Education Center (AWZ) and on-the-job training at the company. Architectural drafters also attend vocational school (Berufskolleg für Technik Siegen). In the work-integrated bachelor’s program, your employer decides on the schedule and your working hours at the company.
Exams for the apprenticeship programs are administered by the Chamber of Crafts (HWK) and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).
The study plans
for the dual degree program and various work-integrated variants can be found on the website of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Siegen or, for the dual degree program, on the AWZ website.
Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn the academic degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).

When and how can I start my studies?

The prerequisite for admission to the program is a general orsubject-specific high school diploma
or a qualifying technical college entrance qualification (minimum grade required!). The Construction Training and Continuing Education Center (AWZ) in Kreuztal provides guidance and support as you begin the dual study program.  The AWZ conducts inter-company training for skilled trades and oversees the entire cohort. It serves as the central coordinating office for training in the dual study program. It is therefore recommended that you contact the AWZ early on. Additionally, before enrolling in the respective winter semester, you will need a training position at a company of your choice.

Training generally begins in early June. University courses usually start in early October. You can find the enrollment deadlines at:

From Degree to Practice

The dual degree program is characterized by its close integration of theory and practice. It offers a broad foundation in engineering as part of a generalist education. Individual specialization in the fields of structural engineering, transportation and civil engineering, or water and environmental engineering allows students to develop a practice-oriented professional profile.
The dual Bachelor’s program thus optimally meets the requirements of employers. You can find potential training companies here.

Here you will find current open training positions for the dual degree program:

Quality of the Program

The dual study program offered by the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Siegen is highly regarded by construction companies, engineering firms, and government agencies in the
region. In a survey, students in our department also rated the current degree programs and study conditions very positively.

What is a dual degree program with integrated vocational training?

A dual degree program with integrated vocational training combines university studies with practical vocational training at a company.
Over the standard period of study of 8 semesters (4 years), students earn two degrees:

  • a vocational qualification in a recognized apprenticeship program
  • a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in civil engineering

If you’re interested in a practice-oriented degree program without vocational training, check out our part-time Bachelor’s program
.

What are the advantages of the dual study program?

  • The program offers a close integration of theory and practice.
  • You’ll gain practical experience right from the start and be able to apply your theoretical knowledge in real-world situations.
  • Upon completion of the program, you’ll already be familiar with your company’s workflow and well-prepared for the demands of the workplace.
  • During your training, you will receive compensation from your training company.

Which apprenticeship programs can I choose?

The dual degree program in Civil Engineering is primarily aimed at those interested in an apprenticeship in the construction trades or the construction industry, but also at those interested in technical drafting in design firms and administrative offices. The program requires collaboration with an inter-company training center. Due to its proximity to the University of Siegen, the Construction Training and Continuing Education Center (AWZ-Bau) in Kreuztal-Fellinghausen is an ideal choice for this purpose.
