The Erasmus+ Program
Erasmus is a funding program of the European Union that facilitates exchanges in education, youth, and sports within Europe and, in some cases, beyond.
The Erasmus+ program supports people in Europe in their personal, professional, and educational development and aims to make Europe more innovative, more socially inclusive, and more stable overall - and to strengthen European identity.
The main goals of Erasmus+ (2021–2027):
- Inclusion & Diversity - Everyone should be able to participate.
- Digitalization - Making Europe fit for the future.
- Environment & Climate - Becoming more sustainable and combating climate change.
- Strengthening Democracy - More participation and co-determination.
To achieve these goals, there are various key actions, including support for individuals, including students of the university which we focus on here.

Grant Duration, Grant Calculation and Reimbursement
Funding duration guidelines
Erasmus+ studies and Erasmus+ traineeships must last at least 60 days and may not exceed 360 days. If you participate in Erasmus+ studies, you must complete the semester or academic year abroad.
In total, you can receive funding for up to 36 months: up to twelve months each for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD programs.
Grant calculation
Funding is available only for academic purposes, i.e., only for the actual duration of your Erasmus+ studies, Erasmus+ traineeship, or short-term stay. If you arrive early or stay longer in the host country, those days are not eligible for funding.
For Erasmus+ studies and Erasmus+ traineeships funding is calculated on a day-by-day basis. Before the start of the stay, we use the planned start and end date from the host institution’s Letter of Acceptance to calculate the planned grant amount.
After the stay, the actual duration of the stay is documented via the so-called Confirmation of Stay, and the actual funding period is recalculated if necessary.
Payment will be made in two installments: 70 percent before the stay and 30 percent after the stay. However, to receive your installments you need to submit the required program documents.
Changes to stay and grant duration
If your Erasmus+ studies Erasmus+ traineeship is shortened by up to 5 days, the grant duration and amount will remain unchanged. If your stay is shortened by more than 5 days, we will recalculate the grant duration and amount. In the event of a significant shortening of your stay, we may request a (partial) reimbursement of the grant funds already disbursed.
You must apply for any extension of your Erasmus+ studies or Erasmus+ traineeship - even if it is only for a few days - at least one month before the planned end of your stay.
Reimbursement cases and proceedings
If you do not submit the required program documents (in full) before or after your stay, if you do not begin your planned stay abroad, or if you terminate it early, we will have to reclaim the funding that has already been disbursed.
In this case, the Department International Student Affairs will issue a claim for reimbursement, granting you four weeks to reimburse the amount.
If you do not reimburse the amount within these 4 weeks, your file will be transferred to Department 3: Legal and Academic Affairs, where the appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated.
Erasmus+ Studies: Minimum Credit Requirement
If you complete your Erasmus+ studies and fail to complete the required minimum of 15 ECTS credits per semester/term, you will be in violation of the terms of the Grant Agreement. In this case, you must submit a statement explaining why the minimum credit requirement was not met. We will decide whether, and, if applicable, to what extent the funding already disbursed must be reclaimed based on your statement.
