Frieder & Henner
Volume 2: Hammerhütte
Eva v. Engelberg-Dočkal and Uschi Huber (eds.)
Siegen 2023
The second volume in the "Frieder & Henner" series documents a joint project by the Department of Architectural History (Eva v. Engelberg-Dočkal) and the Department of Art/Photography (Uschi Huber) at the University of Siegen. The subject of the artistic analysis was the Hammerhütte district, just a few minutes' walk from Siegen's main railway station. Originating from a medieval hammer mill, it is one of the oldest areas of the city, which has undergone numerous changes over the centuries but has never been extensively overplanned. It is therefore characterized by the overlapping of different layers of time and a small-scale, heterogeneous structure that has enabled new perspectives on the city and its history.
At the heart of the volume are the artistic works created by 17 students during the winter semester 2021/22, which were presented in the Alte Hammerhütter Schule in May 2022. The volume is framed by a foreword by city planning officer Henrik Schumann and a text by artist and guest critic of the project Arne Schmitt (Cologne/Zurich).
The volume "Hammerhütte. Artistic exploration of a neighborhood" is available in print and in digital form.
