Further support services
In addition to general advice, there are numerous specific aids to make your everyday life as a student easier - from peer-to-peer advice and financial support to barrier-free campus design. These include, among others:
The University of Siegen has offered a project for student inclusion tutors since the winter semester of 2020/21. These tutors support disabled or chronically ill students in many different areas relating to their studies and study organization. Depending on the type of impairment, there are a variety of individually tailored support options. Students are also given the opportunity to implement their own projects on the topic of studying with disabilities and inclusion at the University of Siegen.
A funding program to support students with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses during the final phase of their studies was launched in October 2014. This support is awarded according to individual needs to students who are in the final phase of their studies and need help in specific areas such as exam preparation or intensive support with final theses. Tutors from the respective departments are approached for this purpose, who support those affected as part of a temporary WHB contract or as short-term employees.
In order to avoid long walks, students with significant mobility impairments can be allocated a disabled parking space on the university campus. The application can be submitted to the representative for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses.
Upon application, a refund of the semester ticket feeis possible for severely disabled students. is possible. This application must be submitted to the ASTA Social Department.
Support for the severely disabled in the canteen
Service for the severely disabled: The Studentenwerk Siegen offers support for blind, visually impaired students or people in wheelchairs when eating in the canteen.
Interested parties can call 0271 / 740-3129 to receive assistance when eating in the canteen. You will then be met in the anteroom of the canteen, a member of staff will go into the canteen with you, explain the menu options and help you pick up your food and return the dishes.
A reading device with DIN A3 scanner, voice output and Braille printer for blind and visually impaired students is available at the workstation for the blind in the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße main library. Instruction by library staff is required.
We offer modern OCR book scanners in the main library and the branch libraries. A total of ten modern scanners are available. In the main library AR there is a barrier-free scanner (level -1) with a touchscreen on the side for easier operation.
The Inclusive University of Siegen Service Office also offers additional support for blind and visually impaired students. Books and texts can be scanned if required so that they can be read aloud to those affected using a speech program. However, scanning the texts is sometimes very difficult, especially if the quality of the copies is not the best. Copies in particular are often of very poor quality and books with a large number of pages are often difficult to scan.
Books, scripts and seminar texts are therefore prepared by a student assistant in such a way that they can easily be used with the help of a reading device. With this service, the University of Siegen provides important help for blind and visually impaired students.
To take advantage of this help, please contact the representative for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses at the University of Siegen.
The university is striving for comprehensive accessibility in all university buildings. However, there is still a considerable need for action, especially in the older buildings. Visually impaired and mobility-impaired students should familiarize themselves with the routes and spatial conditions at an early stage and report any problems to the representative for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses so that they can try to remedy the situation. In addition, campus tours for first-year students are organized on request to help them find their way around.
If courses cannot be accessed barrier-free, it is possible to swap rooms.
Students with mental illness can use the psychological counselingservice at the University of Siegen. is available.
The psychotherapeutic university outpatient clinic also offers support and assistance for students with mental illness.
There are some rooms in the halls of residence of the Studentenwerk that are specially equipped for people in wheelchairs. Early reservation is essential.
Student grants (BAföG) can be extended in justified exceptional cases through a hardship application. Students with health impairments are advised to talk to the responsible case officer (link to the BAföG page of the Studierendenwerk) and the representative for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses in good time about an extension of the study grant.
