Rupprecht Geiger - Three colors
The group of Wednesday Academics during the guided tour of the exhibition.
The guided tour of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MGK) for students of the Wednesday Academy of the University of Siegen takes place once a semester. This time, the aim was to explore the artist Rupprecht Geiger and his works in the colors red, yellow and blue. Geiger was born in Munich in 1908. He was the son of the painter Willi Geiger, studied architecture at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts, completed an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and studied at the Munich State School of Civil Engineering. As a painter, Rupprecht Geiger was self-taught. He created his life's work around the theme of color. Geometric figures also played an important role.
In 1992, the artist was awarded the Rubens Prize by the city of Siegen. The exhibition "Three Colors" with works from the Lambrecht-Schadeberg Collection shows color field paintings from the years 1952 - 1998. In addition to a selection of red paintings, which show color deviations from pink or magenta Geiger's enthusiasm for the color red, these are supplemented by yellow and blue paintings. Yellow stands for the color of light and the sun, blue for the planets and outer space.
Geiger is one of the representatives of Concrete Art, which facilitates access to his works. Everything necessary is immediately available: Color, pigment, light and form. Rectangular and oval motifs are spread across three walls in one room.
