ATHENA Among the European University Alliances in the Weimar Triangle

What role do European university alliances play in strengthening excellence, innovation and sovereignty? This was the topic of discussion among participants at the two-day conference entitled “Shaping Europe: The Role of Universities in the Weimar Triangle Trilateral Conference on European University Alliances”, which took place on 24th–25th September at the University of Warsaw, and was attended by the ATHENA Office of the Universities of Siegen and Orléans, as well as the President of the University of Orléans.

Die Universität Orléans hat zum 720. Gründungsjubiläum Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Haring Bolívar von der Universität Siegen die Ehrendoktorwürde verliehen.

ATHENA Welcomes Students at the Start of the New Academic Year

12 October marked the start of the new academic year at the University of Siegen. The ATHENA European University Alliance team took part in the Freshman Welcome & Career Fair held in the Audimax on the Adolf-Reichwein-Straße campus and greeted the new and returning students.

The Welcome event is always a special opportunity for students to learn about the main university services and programmes which support their studies and professional development as well as provide enriching educational experiences. The ATHENA information stand at the event was a place to discover international education opportunities offered to students and young researchers through the network of Alliance’s partner universities.

Visitors to the ATHENA stand were introduced to its main educational opportunities, such as Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), summer and winter schools, conferences and extracurricular courses, and were also able to find out more about the Joint Master’s Degree Embedded Intelligence Nanosystems Engineering (EMINENT) programme. Besides that, students could learn about the new Double Degree Master’s in Electrical Engineering (EMEE) co-organized by the University of Siegen and VILNIUS TECH, two partner universities of the ATHENA Alliance.

One of the ATHENA’s key goals is to foster students’ academic and professional development through international mobility and cooperation. The interest shown by dozens of students in ATHENA’s offers indicates the value of such approaches to higher education and stresses the role of the institutions that put them into practice.

We congratulate all students and members of the academic community on the start of the new semester and would like to extend a special welcome to students joining the EMINENT and EMEE programmes!

We wish everyone a great start to the academic year and can’t wait to see you at one of our future events!

Siegen's AI flagship project moves into the next phase

The German Research Foundation (DFG) is providing funding for the “Learning to Sense” research group at the University of Siegen for another four years. By combining artificial intelligence with sensor technology, the project opens up new perspectives.

About the Chair

man in a laser lab

The Chair of High-Frequency and Quantum Electronics (HQE) conducts research and teaching on photonic and quantum electronic components for information technology, security technology and the life sciences.

The focus is on research into innovative terahertz technologies. The terahertz frequency range (1 THz = 1012 Hz) is located in the electromagnetic spectrum between microwave and infrared radiation and has great potential in a wide range of applications. Intensive research in recent years has made it possible to identify a large number of interdisciplinary fields of application and to develop technological possibilities for diversely applicable THz systems.

The research work at the Chair of High Frequency Technology and Quantum Electronics includes the simulation, modeling and development of THz systems and the exploration of new areas of application in close cooperation with national and international working groups. The close interdisciplinary cooperation as a member of the Center for Sensor Systems and the Center for Micro- and Nanochemistry within the University of Siegen.

The Terahertz Frequency Range

The terahertz or sub-millimeter wave frequency range, roughly defined as the range between 300 GHz and 10 THz, is one of the longest existing unused regions in the electromagnetic spectrum. Technological advances in recent decades have enabled the development of very sophisticated and complex systems that operate in this frequency range as standard. This has led to major advances in areas such as astronomy or the study of the atmosphere.

Nevertheless, it has not yet been possible to make this spectral range with its diverse potential usable for everyday applications. Thus, the term THz gap was created due to the lack of suitable technologies to effectively bridge this transition region from electronics to optics.

Intensive research in recent years has opened up technological possibilities for broadly applicable THz systems and identified a large number of interdisciplinary application areas. Currently, THz research is in a key phase and will radically expand our analytical capabilities in the near future due to its intrinsic advantages:

  • Many optically dense materials are transparent in the THz range. This results in novel analysis and imaging applications for research and technology

  • THz radiation is non-ionizing and therefore harmless for biomedical analyses and thus offers an alternative to conventional X-ray methods

  • Specific THz molecular rotations and vibrations enable the selective label-free identification of molecules and molecular groups

  • THz radiation provides crucial insights into the electronic dynamics of semiconductors, metals and nanostructures, with the latter playing a particularly important role in photonic and electronic components and systems

  • In contrast to optical wavelengths, THz radiation is less scattered, which favors its use in harsh environmental conditions, e.g. for robotic vision and process control under industrial production conditions.

Research work at the university includes the simulation, modeling and development of THz systems and research into new areas of application in close interdisciplinary collaboration with national and international working groups.

L2S

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has selected L2S as one of eight research units in Germany that conduct targeted basic research in the field of artificial intelligence in conjunction with an interdisciplinary partner field—in this case, the development of sensor systems. The project is based at ZESS, where it can build on more than 30 years of experience in basic and applied interdisciplinary research.
