The psychologist is researching self-control and self-regulation. She wants to find out how loss of control occurs, which neurobiological factors play a role, and why it can even lead to pathological behaviour in some people.
My professorship is titled:
General Psychology (Faculty II)
This is what my research is about:
My professorship focuses on the psychological mechanisms of self-control and self-regulation. We investigate when and why people experience reduced self-control in everyday situations. We are particularly interested in the context of digital media use. We analyze factors such as cravings and habits, and study how children and adolescents develop functional media use. We also intend to collaborate with schools in Siegen.
That’s what fascinates me most about my field of research:
We all experience minor lapses in self-control in everyday life. I am fascinated by understanding how they arise, why they can lead to pathological behaviors such as gaming disorder in some people, and which neurobiological factors play a role.
Why I chose to come to the University of Siegen:
The department's focus areas and networking within Faculty II are a perfect fit for my research. Small cohorts allow for close mentoring, and I am excited to establish the psychophysiology lab. The wonderful colleagues and charming city are the icing on the cake.
My most interesting previous career stations were:
- University of Duisburg-Essen and Essen University Hospital: PhD and postdoc with Prof. Dr. Matthias Brand
- Project management of two sub-projects in the DFG-funded research group FOR2974 "Affective and Cognitive Mechanisms of Specific Internet-use Disorders" (ACSID)
- Research stays:
- University of Hertfordshire, UK (Prof. N.A. Fineberg)
- University of Southampton, UK (Prof. Dr. S.R. Chamberlain)
- Yale University, USA (Prof. Dr. M.N. Potenza)
That’s what students learn in my courses, e.g.:
Students explore core theories of emotion, motivation and learning, as well as teaching mechanisms, always considering their practical relevance. They develop scientific skills, conduct their own studies and learn to carry out research successfully and communicate results clearly.
In my free time I love:
Spending time outdoors with my family, exploring new cultures, taking photos, going on hikes, and (lately) discovering new playgrounds 😉. I also enjoy starting the day with yoga and trying out great food.
