The versatility of language

My name is Karine Demergi and I have been studying Language and Communication at the University of Siegen since 2017. The Bachelor's degree program in Language and Communication not only enables students to learn the form and structure of a language, but also teaches cross-linguistic structures and the various functions of language as a means of communication for different areas. This degree course offers students several study models in which they can choose a language focus. I chose the English language focus because I have always been interested in this language and I was aware of how confident and comfortable I would feel with English during my studies. Forensic Linguistics was one of the most exciting courses on this degree program for me. It is a branch of linguistics and deals with the investigation of crimes. I found it extremely interesting to learn, for example, that it is possible to find out the origin of a perpetrator through linguistic aspects.

From my own experience, I can also convince you that writing term papers is instructive for your studies. In my opinion, there are three good reasons for this:

A lot of literature is required to write a term paper, which means you deal intensively with the respective topic You learn how to write papers in a scientifically correct way You prepare yourself ideally for your Bachelor's thesis

As a student of linguistics, I would like to emphasize the importance and diversity of this degree course. It is used in many different areas, such as criminology (forensic linguistics) as mentioned above, and can therefore be classified as advantageous for various professional fields. You can later work with this linguistic competence in areas such as tourism, marketing, as an interpreter, language teacher, speech therapist, etc.

The following foreign language skills must be proven when choosing the corresponding language. English: language skills of 7-9 years (level B2 according to CEFR); French: language skills of approx. 5-7 years (level B1 according to CEFR); Spanish: language skills recommended, but not required.
