A virtual, accessible model workplace was created as part of the WERTE.IT project. In this workshop, we will present the current status of the virtual, barrier-free model workplace and the idea of physically materializing it. Since the implementation as a real workplace is associated with significant costs and effort, it is essential to clarify questions about the later use in advance, which we would like to work on together with you.
We start with a joint brainstorming session on equipping an accessible sample workstation (a11y Lab). The technically guided question is:
(1) How should the a11y Lab be set up in terms of hardware, software, peripherals and location?
We then address the following socio-technical questions in order to integrate the a11y Lab into existing contexts and practices:
- (2) How can the a11y Lab be meaningfully integrated into teaching?
- (3) What benefits can students and lecturers derive from the a11y Lab?
To answer these questions, we use the Disney method, in which the participants take on different perspectives (critic, realist, dreamer) one after the other.
Finally, before the results are summarized once again by the speakers, we take another look together at other and future usage scenarios of the a11y Lab and thus at the question: (4) What opportunities are there outside of teaching for the region around the a11y Lab location and beyond?
Scope
The workshop will last 60 minutes. At the beginning, the participants will be introduced to the topic with a keynote speech. Afterwards, the above-mentioned questions will be worked on together using various methods.
| Program point | Time of day |
|---|---|
| Welcome and introduction of the speakers | 15:00 - 15:05 |
| Keynote speech on the barrier-free model workplace (a11y Lab) | 15:10 - 15:20 |
| Brainstorming on question (1) | 15:20 - 15:30 |
| Working on questions (2) and (3) using the Disney method | 15:30 - 15:50 |
| Brainstorming on question (4) and final reflection | 15:50 - 16:00 |
Target group
Our workshop is aimed at people with and without disabilities, students, lecturers and anyone interested in the topic of accessibility. The different perspectives are very important for the design of the a11y Lab and its later use for teaching and practice.
Online platform used
We use WebEx as a video platform for the workshop. During the workshop, we will share a Microsoft Word document with all participants via OneDrive, which everyone can access individually on their PC. We will document the results of our discussions there.
