Welcome to the University of Siegen
Dear first semester students,
We are delighted that you are now part of our University of Siegen community. To make it easier for you to start your studies, we have put together the most important IT services for your studies at our university.
From your student email address, ZIMT account, access to the university WiFi and learning management system to free MS 365 and cloud storage - with these IT basics, you'll be well connected, organized and ready to start your studies.
Enjoy discovering them and have a successful start to university life!
The most important IT services for starting your studies
At the start of your studies you will receive the access data for your ZIMT account. The account consists of
- the student e-mail address
Just like the example john.doe@student.uni-siegen.de - User ID + password
g + six-digit number combination(g123456)
With the data of your personal ZIMT account you have access to important IT services at the university, which we explain to you in the fold-outs below.
Activate your ZIMT account
Even though both systems are independent of each other, the ZIMT account is initially activated via unisono:
- To activate your ZIMT account, log in to unisono.
(You can access your unisono account via your matriculation number and a password of your choice). - Then select the "Student life" tab and then "ZIMT account".
- Click on the link to be redirected to activate your account.
You can also change your password this way if you have forgotten it. - Once you have successfully registered, you will be redirected to a page where your ZIMT account details, user ID and student e-mail address will be displayed. Memorize them well or write them down, as the user ID is required to log in to all ZIMT services.
All student e-mail addresses at the University of Siegen are made up of the following components:
prename.surname@student.uni-siegen.de
I have a private e-mail address. Is the student e-mail address really necessary?
Yes!
It is absolutely necessary to activate the ZIMT account and the university e-mail inbox, as official e-mails from the university (e.g. from your teachers, the student office or the examination offices etc.) are sent to the student e-mail address. This also clearly identifies you as a member of the university. Therefore, please only use the student e-mail address for your e-mails within the university.
With the WiFi service eduroam (Education Roaming) you have free internet access at the university.
You can log in using your ZIMT account details.
Good to know: eduroam is available at 2900 locations in Germany and at universities in 106 countries. So if, for example, you are studying at a university abroad during a semester and this university has eduroam, too, you don't need guest access for the Wi-Fi there, but can log in with your ZIMT account data.
You will need the geteduroam app for eduroam to work on your devices.
You can find the installation instructions https://www.uni-siegen.de/en/zimt/eduroam.
The free OpenVPN (Virtual Private Network) service gives you access to university content and services that are otherwise only accessible within the university, e.g. licensed databases and electronic journals with full texts from the university library.
You can log in using your ZIMT account details.
All you need is the OpenVPN app.
You can find the installation instructions at https://www.uni-siegen.de/vpn.
Moodle is the central digital learning management system at the University of Siegen. It supports the organization and integration of online and classroom teaching.
Teachers use it to distribute their course materials, organize working groups or start submission campaigns for uploading assignments or tests and much more.
Depending on your teacher's course setup, you can also upload documents, PDFs, images and videos to the course yourself, to work on them together, for example.
You can log in using your ZIMT account details.
The access data of your ZIMT account is necessary to use the catalogues of the university library.
Please note: Although you log in with the user data of the ZIMT account, the library account is managed by the University Library and is not the same as the ZIMT account. The ZIMT account is only used here for authentication purposes.
sciebo is a non-commercial, free cloud storage service for research and teaching that offers all members of the university the opportunity to store and structure large files and work on them together via shared folders. The service is made available to universities in North Rhine-Westphalia by the University of Muenster. The data is stored exclusively at three university locations in NRW!
You can use 30 GB free of charge as long as you are a member of the university.
You can access your personal file area via the usual web interface, the sciebo desktop client (by Nextcloud) or the sciebo app.
Simply share files and folders with other people. You may, optionally, protect your data with a password protection or share it only for a limited time.
There is also an online office suite integrated into sciebo! This enables simultaneous editing of text, presentation and spreadsheet documents during lessons, video conferences or office hours, etc.
You can register with sciebo using your ZIMT account access data.
