Advising processes are an essential part of student learning. Effective and goal-oriented advising is therefore of fundamental importance for academic success.

To facilitate successful advising, faculty members should be aware of the various roles they may assume during an advising process. This enables them to adapt their role to the situation and respond flexibly to students’ needs.

For goal-oriented advising, it is important to systematically structure the advising process. This includes, on the one hand, careful preparation in which the content and organizational framework, as well as expectations, are communicated transparently. On the other hand, careful follow-up is crucial, with the agreed-upon action goals serving as the basis for the next steps. This fosters constructive and beneficial collaboration throughout the counseling process.

In this online workshop, we will therefore explore how to design an effective and goal-oriented counseling process. We will reflect on the various roles in counseling situations and work with practical tools, such as a preparatory questionnaire and the formulation of SMART action goals.
