Assessment and grading can be a challenge—especially for instructors who are new to the higher education context. In this introductory workshop, we’ll begin by exploring the process of assessment and grading by analyzing the function and significance of exams in the context of constructive alignment and competency-based education.

We will then examine various taxonomies of learning objectives, building on the importance of learning outcomes for the assessment process, and explore how learning objectives can be formulated effectively.

Participants will immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge by formulating their own learning outcomes. These will then be critically examined with regard to formative and summative assessment methods.

Finally, we will discuss quality criteria for assessments and reflect on the significance of various reference standards as well as potential assessment errors.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to…

  • assess the function of assessments within the Constructive Alignment model.
  • distinguish between formative and summative assessment methods.
  • developcompetency-based learning outcomes.
  • distinguishbetween quality criteria for assessments.
  • assess the significance of reference standards and assessment errors.
