Pi-Day is March 14. Because in American spelling the date consists of the first three digits 3.14 of the number Pi, the "International Mathematics Day" is celebrated worldwide on this day - including at the University of Siegen. This time, the colorful program around mathematics will take place on Tuesday, March 17.
The University of Siegen invites all interested parties to the Lower Castle Campus. Pupils, students, teachers, families and curious people of all ages can look forward to a varied program of lectures, workshops and hands-on activities all about the fascinating world of mathematics.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. with the official opening in lecture hall US-C-116, with words of welcome from Mayor Tristan Vitt and the Rector of the University of Siegen, Prof. Dr. Stefanie Reese. The day will be hosted by geomathematician Prof. Dr. Volker Michel.
Mathematics will be examined from very different perspectives in easy-to-understand lectures: from earthquake research, chance and probabilities to artificial intelligence, medicine, education and philosophical questions. At the same time, there will be a special lecture program for pupils from the 9th grade upwards. The audience can solve puzzles together in the interactive "pack quiz".
The range of lectures is complemented by workshops, for example on building a paperclip computer, mathematical escape games, chess and mathematics, Fermi tasks or calculating like in ancient Egypt. Depending on what is on offer, the workshops are aimed at participants from Year 5 or 7.
In the foyer of the lecture hall center, an information stand will provide information about mathematics, studying at the University of Siegen and the event day. This is also where the big "pi times thumbs" estimation competition will take place, where pupils can put their number sense to the test. The award ceremony will take place at 2 pm.
The Day of Mathematics ends at around 2.30 pm. Everyone is invited, from schoolchildren to pensioners. Curiosity is enough.
