Music by Johann Sebastian Bach, William Albright, Martin Herchenröder and Olivier Messiaen
Martin Herchenröder, introduction and organ
When the evangelist Luke describes in the Acts of the Apostles how the Holy Spirit comes to Jesus' disciples at Pentecost, he does so with an image: "tongues as of fire" flickering on their heads. Since then, fire has been one of the symbols of the Pentecost event, as a symbol of its power to ignite people for faith. The program of this concert takes this as its starting point and begins with the opening movement from Olivier Messiaen's Pentecost Mass, "The Tongues of Fire"; from here it explores the wild, destructive, warming and emotional side of fire in music from the 18th to the 21st century. "Half an hour of organ music" is a concert format that the Kantorei Siegen and the University of Siegen's Studio for New Music offer together once a year: A short introduction opens up listening perspectives, followed by musical works from ancient and more recent times on a common theme.
Admission is free.
