Application for the 1st semester

  • Applications for degree programs with restricted admission are possible from the beginning of June - 15.07.2025.
  • Information on the individual degree programs can be found here (Application required? Start in the summer semester or only in the winter semester? etc.)
  • In some undergraduate degree programs at the University of Siegen, there are more applicants than places available. Therefore, a selection must be made and the degree program is considered admission-restricted. An application is required for this. You can find information on the selection procedure here (link to https://www.uni-siegen.de/zsb/docs/bewerbung/studienplatzvergabe_allgemein.pdf?m=ebzw) or for the Bachelor's degree course in Psychology here (link to https://www.uni-siegen.de/zsb/docs/bewerbung/studienplatzvergabe_psychologie.pdf?m=e). Free enrolment is possible for degree programs without admission restrictions.
  • Applications for admission-restricted Bachelor's degree programs are possible until 15 July each year (cut-off deadline) for Germans, Bildungsinländer* and EU/EEA citizens.
  • There is no distinction between old/new high school graduates. This deadline also applies to any documents to be submitted.
  • International prospective students (without a German school-leaving certificate) should contact STARTING.
  • Admissions are made between the end of July and the end of September. These are made available for download in unisono. You must then enrol by the deadline stated in the letter of admission.
  • You can find the allocation of study places here.
  • If you do not have an Abitur and are in employment, please refer to this page.
  • If you have the Fachhochschulreife, please refer to this page.

You must applyfor the following degree programs via unisono :

  • Primary school teaching degree
    • subject teaching
  • Hauptschule, Realschule, secondary school and comprehensive school
    • Biology
  • Grammar school/comprehensive school
    • Biology

In addition to applying via unisono, prior registration with Hochschulstart is required for the following degree programs:

Information on the enrollment process can be found here.

Via Unisono (all degree programs for which no additional registration with Hochschulstart is required):

I create an account in the online portal of the University of Siegen (unisono) and complete the online application. If I am not admitted in the main procedure, I will automatically take part in any succession procedure that may take place.

Via Hochschulstart and Unisono (for all other Bachelor's degree programs with admission restrictions):

  • Step 1: Registration at (additionally via www.hochschulstart.de). I click on the activation link within 72 hours and receive my personal BID and BAN.
  • Step 2: With the BID and BAN, I create an account in the online portal of the University of Siegen (unisono) and complete the online application.
  • Step 3: In my hochschulstart user account, I can find all my applications participating in the coordination. By 15.07. at the latest, I put them in an order in which my favorite is in first place (prioritization).
  • Step 4:
    • Variant A
I receive at least one offer of admission in Hochschulstart by the end of the coordination process. Only one offer of admission is received at a time.
Important: The offers with a lower priority are eliminated! As soon as I accept an offer, I will receive admission for it and all other applications will be permanently deleted.
I will then receive a letter of admission and enrol directly at the university. I can find all further information and deadlines in the notification or at the relevant university. I will receive rejection notices for applications that have been rejected by the university.
    • Variant B
I do not receive an offer of admission. I will receive a rejection letter and a link per application by e-mail to participate in the coordinated succession procedure.
During the coordinated succession procedure, the remaining places will be allocated. If I would like to have another chance to get a place in the winter semester, I confirm my participation in the succession procedure for this degree program within 72 hours, provided that it participates in the coordinated succession procedure (only if not all places could be allocated at the end of the main procedure.
As soon as I receive an offer of admission in the succession procedure, all other applications with which I participate in the succession procedure at Hochschulstart are definitively eliminated (no prioritization is possible here!).
To stay informed, I regularly read my e-mails and check my application status in the Hochschulstart application portal.
  • Prospective students who have not yet taken part in the current procedure can also apply for courses in the coordinated succession procedure, provided that these courses take part in this extra phase. Study places are allocated by lot. All participating degree programs will be published here after the main procedure has been completed. This only applies to degree programs that are coordinated via Hochschulstart.de.
  • The admission and rejection notifications for the application procedure will only be made available to you in your account. A notification that the notifications are available will be sent to the e-mail address you provided during registration. They will not be sent by post.

  • Questions about the Hochschulstart procedure: 0180/7122-448 (fee-based hotline)
  • Questions about choosing a course/application: 0271/740-2712 (free hotline of the Central Student Advisory Service of the University of Siegen)

Second degree

Applicants who have already completed a degree at a German university (e.g. with a Diplom, Bachelor's or Master's degree) by the application deadline and now wish to pursue a second Bachelor's or Master's degree are generally considered second degree applicants. However, a Master's degree that builds on the Bachelor's degree is not a second degree, but a so-called "consecutive degree".

In degree programs with restricted admission, 3% of the available study places on a degree program are available for second degree applicants. These places are not allocated on the basis of average grade and waiting time, as is normally the case, but on the basis of a measured number. This number is calculated from the examination results of the first degree course and the reasons for the second degree course.

If you would like to apply for a second degree program, please complete the online application and upload the following documents:

  • a copy of your degree certificate and the certificate of your first degree or preliminary results of your degree,
  • a detailed written justification for your second degree program with information about your previous education and professional activities as well as your intended career goal; this justification should include all aspects that are relevant to your second degree program.

Admission to a second degree program

Study places are awarded on the basis of a points value (measured number), which is calculated from the examination result of the first degree course and the reasons for the second degree course. In addition, the same formal admission requirements apply to second degree applicants as to first degree applicants.

Final grade of the first degree program

The following points are awarded for the examination result of the completed first degree program:

  • Grades "excellent" and "very good" 4 points
  • Grades "good" and fully "satisfactory" 3 points
  • Grade "satisfactory" 2 points
  • Grade "sufficient" 1 point
  • Grade "not proven" 1 point

The grade with which you completed your first degree must be documented in your degree certificate or in a certificate from the office responsible for issuing the degree certificate, or you must enclose certificates from the examination office (results notifications from the examination office) with your application for admission. Otherwise, the worst performance grade must be used as a basis.

Weighting of the reasons for the second degree

  • Mandatory professional reasons 9 points
  • Academic reasons 7 to 11 points
  • Special professional reasons 7 points
  • Other professional reasons 4 points
  • Other reasons 1 point

Details on the reasons for a second degree course can be found in the guidelines of the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung. If you are seeking to reintegrate or re-enter working life after a family phase, you can receive an increase of up to 2 points when applying for a second degree. The increase can be considered if the previous professional activity had to be given up for family reasons (e.g. marriage, raising children) or if it was necessary to forego taking up an adequate professional activity after completing the first degree course out of consideration for family concerns. The amount of the points supplement depends on the degree to which the student is affected. The extent of the burden (e.g. number of children, duration of the family phase) must be taken into account in an appropriate manner. There is no accumulation of several reasons; the most favorable case group is taken as a basis in each case. The points supplement for applicants who have previously postponed their second degree for family reasons is independent of this; it is granted in addition.

Selection

The points for your first degree and for your justification are added together to form a score. The score is decisive for your placement on the ranking list of second degree applicants. Applicants with a higher score take precedence over those with a lower score. Ranking positions between applicants with the same measurement number are determined using so-called subordinate criteria. Those who have completed a service first. Then the lot decides. This means that there is a clear ranking order on each ranking list among the second degree applicants who are applying for the same degree program. Selection is made in this order until all study places available for the ranking list in question have been exhausted.

The application

Applications are submitted online via the unisono application portal.

The deadlines

The same application deadlines apply as for first degree applicants.
