BA 11.1 - Structural System
Winter Semester
The BA 11.1 – Structural Engineering module teaches the fundamentals of structural systems. The goal is to develop the necessary vocabulary and a basic understanding for collaborating with structural engineers and to apply this knowledge directly to architectural design.
Starting with the various forces acting on structures and their superpositions, students learn to identify and organize loads and to group them into load case combinations. Building on this foundation, students analyze the transmission of loads down to the supports using analytical and graphical methods.
Module BA 11.1—Structural Design—places a special emphasis on linear structures. Using members, bracing systems, and trusses, students analyze the fundamental principles of tension, compression, equilibrium, and force flow and adapt them for architectural design. Illustrative models and experimental tests complement the theoretical concepts.
The semester concludes with a structural design project. Using the example of a tower, the principles covered earlier are integrated and applied in the design process.
