BA 11.3 - Structural System

Winter Semester

BA 30 Vertiefung Membrane_Bild

In Module BA 11.3—Structural Design—the relationships between structural form, force flow, and structural design are supplemented and examined in greater depth with regard to deformation. Starting with the deformation of members subjected to bending, the structural behavior of frames is examined and subsequently extended to planar structures. In this process, the linear structures covered earlier are expanded to include structural systems in which the surface plays a significant role in load transfer.

Using two- and three-hinged frames as well as simply supported frames, the relationships between structural geometry, support conditions, and internal forces are examined in relation to architectural design. Building on this foundation, the course delves deeper into panels, slabs, and spatial trusses. The course series concludes with structural systems such as cable nets, membranes, and shells, in which the shape influences the structural behavior. Central aspects of the various structural forms are the structural and architectural possibilities they offer for design.

The theoretical discussion is supplemented by illustrative models, experimental investigations, and a site visit. Structural analysis combines the examination of a real structural system with analytical elaboration, thereby deepening the understanding of the interaction between structure and architecture.
