BA 30 - Advanced Course: Shells | MA 10 - Advanced Course: Shells

Winter Semester

Schale aus Gips

Shells are single- or double-curved surface structures that transfer loads perpendicular to the plane like a plate and within the plane like a disk. These structures efficiently utilize the material’s load-bearing capacity through an optimal shape, thereby achieving very large spans with a minimal structural framework.

In BA 30 – Advanced | MA 10 – Advanced, this structural system will first be examined in detail in a theoretical section, where the structural constraints will be analyzed and the possible applications will be explored using examples of built structures. This will be followed by the determination of an optimal shape, along with its advantages and disadvantages.

In the practical section, the task involves designing different types of shells and constructing them using a suspended model. This is followed by documentation. The goal of this elective module is to understand shells as a structural element and, through practical implementation, to gain another tool for design within the architecture curriculum.
