The Department of Structural Engineering at the University of Siegen, in collaboration with KRD Coatings GmbH of Bardowick, is developing an innovative composite material made of (thin) glass and polycarbonate to reduce the cross-sectional area and dead weight while incorporating additional adaptive functions.
A single-pane glass fails spontaneously without warning. The combination of two glass panes with a polymer interlayer results in laminated safety glass, which protects against injury through its adhesive bond and ensures residual load-bearing capacity. However, large-format glazing leads to thick cross-sections and high dead weight.
A reduction is possible, for example, through the use of plastic panels, such as polycarbonate. However, their application in the building envelope often also requires control of daylight and energy transmission. This is to be achieved through adaptive functions, offering a thin and lightweight alternative to conventional laminated safety glass.
