The Department of Structural Engineering at the University of Siegen, in collaboration with the company Glaszentrum Weber + Wagener GmbH & Co. KG from Freudenberg, is developing a multi-paneinsulating glass with bio-based sealants in the edge seal to significantly improve the environmental friendliness—and thus the sustainability—of thermally insulating glazing.
The performance of multi-pane insulating glass as a thermal insulation element in the building envelope depends largely on the durability of the edge seal. However, the sealants currently used in production contain hazardous substances, such as mercury, and are therefore not considered environmentally friendly. Consequently, the use of sustainable sealants in the edge seal of multi-pane insulating glass is becoming increasingly important.
Sustainable sealants are bio-based materials that have no negative impact on the environment during their manufacture or use. Compared to conventional sealants, they contain fewer harmful chemicals and more biodegradable components. Using a bio-based sealant in the edge seal of multi-pane insulating glass allows for the creation of environmentally friendly glazing.
