In this research project involving ultra-thin and thin glass, novel glass-polycarbonate laminated panels are being developed. Thanks to the combination of two different materials, these laminated panels exhibit significantly better performance and greater adaptability than conventional laminated glass.
The lamination of thin glass with polycarbonate expands the range of applications for glazing with safety-related requirements. Compared to conventional glass laminates, these laminated panels are thinner and lighter while offering otherwise comparable properties. The lower thermal conductivity of polycarbonate compared to glass improves the U-value of the entire glazing system. This opens up particularly interesting applications in the field of insulating glass.
Coating polycarbonate panels with ultra-thin glass combines the advantages of plastics’ ease of forming with the durable surface of glass. Sufficient residual load-bearing capacity is ensured by the system’s inherent redundancy. This makes it possible to explore new areas of application, particularly in vertical and horizontal building envelopes.
